Nice job Jeff, you made it look so easy to do. I was wondering, is your workshop pretty well ventilated, considering all that smell coming from the glue and paint?
Yes.

Tomorrow I am going to update my main

with pictures of my shop, the models I already have completed (some of which I have had to repair recently due to grandkids getting a hold of them and damaging the...yut that's alright...it's just paint, glue and plastic and easily repaired. Hurt feelings of little ones are not as easily repaired), my "stash" of 35 or so unbuilt models, etc.

As you will see, I have a window right there, a fan, and good cross ventilation.

Good question!

Hehehe...there's a whole lot worse ways to go!

But I believe, now that I have pretty much stabilized from my

, that I have a lot of life left in me, and the model building has been one of the therapuetic ways of dealing with it, along with work and a lot of time with wife, kids, and grandkids!

Got a couple of grandsons helping me with it too, which is also a lot of fun.

Well, the DDGs and other non-carrier surface ships go a lot faster. I still have a couple of weeks left on this to get everything done, so it will be close to a month. Then I will start the USS Enterprise and that's going to be a good 4+ months of work and will go a lot slower.

Thanks for the kind words!

Quite Right, and a lot of his brothers here on Sino D are praying for him, speaking of brothers, and I feel that way about all you guys, are there any sisters on Sino D, or maybe they just couldn't tolerate us dudes? I know its a dumb question, but it seems that the ladies are not interested in this stuff?

Well, I haven't seen any (hehehe of course) but with the psuedo names, you never know. I suspect there are in fact sister SD enthusiasts, either lurking and perhaps posting.

Nawh! that would take the fun out of it, my next door neighbor on LRAFB was a Cpt, and an IP in the 130 like my Dad. He was a motorhead, "yes I did scare him in his own 65 corvette with the 396 Big Block, rated a 425hp", loved the smell of gasoline. He was a Texan, and related that his Uncle found him passed out on the top of the gas barrel, "yes, all US farms had a gas barrel", right bd, anyway he had climbed up on top of it and had the filler cap open and his nose down in it and passed out. Gasoline smelled a lot better in the old days, especially AV-Gas. Anyway JP only smells good after its burned, coming out of the nozzle. So if you must sniff, keep it brief, as it does kill brain cells. Really don't do it!

Now that is a good old sailor's story told by a US Air Force old coot...hehehe. Good story though...I was just picturing it in my mind's eye. LOL!

Yes, and it is all true, his name is Bonn Tanner, and his brother is George Tanner, but he was quite bright, until I had to drive him to town to gets some car parts for his Toyota in that Vette, I think I gave him his first gray hairs, as I only had a learners permit and was fourteen. That Vette ruined me for life, thats why I still have a GSXR 1000 Suzuki in the garage, but he didn't like bikes, but its the only kind of serious speed I can afford. The models are great and your right the kids can't keep their hands off of them, old or young, I can still remember my Dad, picking up one of my many airplanes and showing me some "aerobatics" complete with sound effects.

As I indicated the other day, I added some pictures of the area I use to as a shop to build the models and place them on shelves...thought some folks might be intetrested:

COMPLETING THE MODEL (June 10, 2012)

After masking off and painting the landing area rectangle, I then built and painted the KA-27 ASW helicopter, building it with its rotors in the stowed positon, as it is being moved out of the hangar and onto the Helo deck preparing for take-off.

I then spray painted the model in gloss coat, applied the decals for Pennant Number 171 for the Haikou, and did the same for the helo. Once the decals dried, I did some touch up painting and other grooming, and then spray painted the model in dull coat for the final finish.

Here are twelve good pictures regarding how she looks now, completed as of June 10, 2012:

Schedule of Future Activities (June 10, 2012)

This is a great build. Trumpeter makes some really good products, particularly in their 1/350 scael ships.

Once it is complete, it will be back to the Aircraft Carrier Battle groups. My current schedule calls for the following regarding those groups:

- By June 10, 2012: Start the USS Enterprise, CVN-65.
- By Sep 15, 2012: Complete the USS Enterprise, CVN-65.
- By Oct 15, 2012: Complete the USS Lassen, DDG-82.
- By Nov 15, 2012: Complete the PLAN Ningbo, DDG-139.
- By Dec 15, 2012: Complete the USS Freedom, LCS-1.

At that point I will go back and complete the remained of the PLAN Carrier group, centered on the already completed the PLA Navy's Aircraft Carrier in 1/350 scale by Trumpeter, including Mini Hobby's's DDG-168; two of Trumpeter's Type 054A FFGs, one the FFG-570, Huangshan, and the Hobby Boss PLAN ChangZheng5, SSN-405. (The only ones I need there are the two Type 054 frigates which come out late this summer, I already own all the rest).

Then, it will be on to finish the US Carrier Strike group including Mini Hobby'ss USS Bunker Hill, CG-52, and the Los Angeles Class attack sumbmarine (which I have already completed), Testor's SSN-764, USS Boise (It was actaully the San Juan, but I built and marked it as the USS Boise), Trumpeter's USS Iwo Jima LHD-7, Cyber Hobby's USS Independence, LCS-2, Hobby Boss's USS Texas, SSN-775. (All of which I already own)

When a 1/350 scale USS Gerald R. Ford comes out from Trumpeter, Airfix, Tamiya, Dragon, or whomever else, I will add it to this group along with another AEGIS Cruiser and Burke DDG.

Once the US and PLAN groups are built, I intend on building a complete UK Group including the Airfix HMS Illustrious (which I already own), two Airfix Daring Class DDGs (which I have yet to purchase but have pre-ordered for delivery later this summer), and the Hobby Boss HMS Astute SSN and Airfix HMS Tragalgar SSN, both of which which I already own. One day, when a 1/350 scale HMS Queen Elizabeth carrier comes out, I will add it to this group.

Then it will be a complete Russian CSG (centered on Trumpeter's Kuznetsov) one of the Russian Nuclear Battle Cruisers, two Trumpeter Udalaoy DDGs and Hobby Boss's Akula II class SSN (which I alread have) and the Russian Alfa Class SSN which I have already completed.

Then, again, once the models are available, I'd like to build a Japanese group centered on their new 22DDH carrier and the Hyuga, an Italian Group centered on the Cavour, a French Group centered on the De Gaulle, a Spanish Group centered on the Jaun Carlos, and ultimatly an Australian Group centered on the new Canberra Class. If they ever build the models, an Indian group centered on either the Vikramaditya or their new ADS Carrier the Vikrant would also be nice. You can see all of these actual carriers, read their histories and specifictions at my site:

All of these along with their escorts will be in 1/350 scale. Literally years worth of building.

Awesome work Jeff! You didn't need to do any sandpapering or smoothing at all after you spray paint them?

No, not with the glosscoat and then the dull coat. These are clear laquers and the first give a very shiny appearance so that after it is dry and you place decals, the decals are much harder to see their edges. Then, after they dry well, you go back over it with a dull coat (again clear) and that gives you that flat navy finish to what ever you have already accomplished with painting, details.

Usually any smoothing and sanding occurs before the painting starts to get everything as smooth as possible.

Before those final two coats of the clear laquer (which serve as protective coats as well) any weatherinalso occurs...a little dry brushing of very thinned black or rust colors in certain locations to make them look more "used," and therefore more realistic.

I already have much of the hangar deck for the large USS Enterprise fginished today which I am having to sratch build because the Tamiya Enterprise model, which is a very good model, did not have the hanger deck included. So I am building one so I can place aircraft, equipment, and additional detail in there. I did one for the Chinese PLAN Carrier too.

I'll start a new page/thread for my Enterprise this week. I expect this monster is going to take me a good three months to complete.

I believe the Haikou, DDG-171 turned out pretty well. This is one of the nicest pictures I like of her:

Hehehe...that 5" gun is looking right at you. I made it able to turn through it's complete range, and the barrel elevates as well.
