The Chinese will have simulated the use of both types of cat, the EM one also incorporated into the ski jump. They have probably concluded that the future lays with the EM cats and avoided developing the steam cat.
The Dutch carrier Karel Doorman ( the second one ) was a Colossus type British carrier, originally HMS Venerable, taken over in 1948 and sold to Argentina in 1969. From July, 1955 to June, 1958 she was rebuild with angled deck and with a steam cat
replacing a hydraulic one. For Varyag the operation would probably be more complex and that for what is probably a dead end technology.

I think that a good evidence that the chinese are developing would be to uncover its hipotetical teste site. Something like that should be big, hard to hide. Unfortunatly, no one has done it so far.

@ Martian,

Nobody would take it offence if you call it Varyag; many will, if you follow the Jane's agenda and call it nothing better than Shi Lang. I say leave the flambite job to others while we stick to the "political right" name.

There is a realistic chance that J-15 will eventually evolve into a very capable 3.5 or 3.75 generation heavy naval fighter superior to today's super hornet. Think about Super Tomcat 21.

Hence its follow on variant which is assumed to be in development, the J-18. Supposed to be more stealthy.

The current J-15, when equipped with AESA for production, would be by definition classified as a 4.5th generation fighter.

J-15 Flying Shark equipped with domestic WS-10 engines

Do you remember this picture of China's J-15 Flying Shark navalized fighter from a few months ago? The jet engines were covered by a tarp and we couldn't ascertain the engine type.

For completeness, I have included a picture of China's indigenous J-11B (except for airframe) fighter equipped with WS-10 engines.


J-11B was the first to be powered by WS-10 (or Taihang) engines.

Nice pic of the J-15!

Anyone ever ascertained whether there are more J-15s in official PLAN colors. The earlier pics looked like there might be more in the background, but I do not believe it has been confirmed.
