In fact, there may well be a treaty between the two countries regarding the same.

My guess is the PLAN will be looking to hire retired "consultants" from wherever they can find them, for top dollar, to help them in this area.

They will probably get lots of takers from Russia and perhaps France.

I agree Jeff. My guess is that as soon as China begins carrier operations, Russia will be the paid consultant. China will want to gain experience fast in this area, and I think the Russians will be useful. But I still don't think China will deploy with the Varyag as an operational carrier. Maybe a training carrier. China will build a carrier of her own design that suits her needs. I'm guessing it will be conventionally powered, and it will be slightly smaller than a US Kitty Hawk Class CV.

An 13,500 ton Escort ?

Hehehe...that's how they are getting around their own legilsation. Sort of like the "Pocket Battleships", or Russiia's "Aviation Cruiser".

Any carrier they build now, or refit at this point, in essence is going to be a training carrier. I believe they will deploy it and get as much experience and benefit from it (politically and militarily) as they can. They will follow this up with one of their own for sure...but they will hope to have gained as much experience in every way with it that they can before that.

Just my own opinion.

It's like the Biritsh thorugh-deck cruisers, cheating no one but their own politicans. Is the DDH going to operate fixed-wing assets (JSF) or be a ASW ship only?

They are only showing helos...but I will bet that the JSF ultimately flies off those decks.

Well, you quoted me from a discussion about the Varyag...and it most certainly does have a hangar deck.

If you are taklking about the picture of the Japanese DDH that I posted...well, I must presume that it does have a good sized hangar deck. I cannot see them building a flat top that size without the facilities to maintian the helos beneath the flight deck...and I bet they will be able to accomodate the JSF too.

Agreed. But if the CIWS stays on the bow it will be purely VTOL...not STOL there.
