absolutely certainly? Can an airplane like the J-15 not be modified for a catapult take off? Above all if a catapult seems anyway for the next carrier generation intended ...
I expect the cat on the Brazilian carrier is not powerful enough to launch a J-15.

You are right...it is not.

What they plan for their new carrier at this point, I am not sure, but IMHO, those decisions are already being made in any case.

It is fairly evident that the Brazilians will work with the French to design and then build in Brazil their new carrier. And they have already chosen the Grippen for their future aircraft and will almost certainly go for the Sea Grippen for their carrier aircraft.

So, the current PLAN Carrier air wing is apparently going to involve J-15s, Ka-31s for AEW to begin with, Ka-27s for ASW, and Z-9s for SAR/ASW?

What do people think in terms of the composition?

24 J-15s all the time, or 12 or so for peace time to be augmented as needed?

I believe ultimately the PLAN will use its own Z-8 derivative for AEW...but that is probably a ways away yet.

Maybe 12 J-15 and 12 trainer or more for peace time. They'll need to train a lot of aviators for follow on carriers anyway.

Well, with the Land Based training facility, right now they are training new pilots on the carrier, and qualifying them with J-15s.

I am not sure they have a naval version of either the JL-9 or JL-15 ready for the carrier.

Hard to say.

I will be interesting to see how they go forward once they have the initial squadron trained.

I believe they will go ahead and train 24 pilots and then either have them all operate off of the carrier so they can get very well versed in the doctrine the PLAN develops, or rotate them through twelve at a time in peace time.

Probably see 3-4 AEW helos, 3-4 SAR/ASW helos, and 6-8 dedicated ASW helos to go along with that.

I would expect them to train two or three times 24 pilots and rotates them through the carrier 12 at a time. Also pilots with enough seniority will again be candidates to develop to the command of ships and other senior positions.

I thought I saw some pics before in this forum showing JL-9 variant with tail hook, but I'm not sure if that makes them carrier capable or whether they are only for land-based training.

One of the pics I got from google:

Oh...they are certainly testing them. But that has all been on land to date and only with a few made-up aircraft.

I am not aware of any actual production of them, and I know they have not been on the carrier yet.

Agreed, delft.

With their stated goals of going to several carriers...they will continue to add to their pool of trained pilots who will ultimately come into command positions just like we see happen in the US Navy.
