PLAN Carrier Strike Group and Airwing

Re: J-15 Carrier Multirole Fighter thread

It's my belief that US will and have developed fixed wing assets from thier carriers

And Europe will go down the rotary wing avenue since they have the absence of cats and taps

Down side of a ski jump is lack of UCAV capabilitys, so I guess Europe is going to develop rotary wing UCAV as is the case for AWACS and tanker based on V-22 Osprey

Question is which way is China going to go fixed wing or rotary wing for AWACS, tanker and UCAV

Re: J-15 Carrier Multirole Fighter thread

The PLAN has hardly been coy about using the USN as a model and benchmark for the development of their carrier SOP, and I seriously doubt they would stop there, so I think there is no question that the PLAN will base their carrier SOP and future development and procurement goals closely on what the USN is currently doing and planned for the future.

I'm not quite sure I agree with you that Europe is going down the rotorywing route for carriers since both the British and French carriers will have fixed wing fastjet aviation as the primary reason for their existence.

Not going for CATs seems more like the typical short sighted and hopelessly clueless decisions British professional bean counters and their political masters seems apt at coming up with to maximise expenditure and waste while minimising results and benefits.

Someone setting out to deliberately hobble the British military would have been hard pressed to outdo the last couple of governments, so I seriously doubt anyone, least of all the Chinese, would emulate their spectacularly bad choices in terms of defense planning and expenditure.

Great post plawolf..

I really think that at this moment that the PLAN is conducting

with CV-16. As the PLAN has stated many times. And this is what we are seeing at this time.

So fellows just sit back relax and enjoy the ride.. someday it will all come into fruition.

When considering the Brits, its always helpful to remember how important "tradition", and doing things the "British" way are, the F-35B is a great follow-on to the Harrier, the USMC agrees as well, while you could say its a fashion statement, it goes much deeper than that.....

Re: PLAN Aircraft Carrier programme..News & Views

We know the ship went to sea recently. However we've seen no new media releases or phptos of what may be happening aboard CV-16.

If anyone has any NEW news, photos or videos please postI I can't find any..

Please do not re-post the same crusty photos we've been looking at the last three years.. Thank you!

Re: PLAN Aircraft Carrier programme..News & Views

I suppose the images of those few J-15's landing and taking off from the Liaoning is getting old even for the Chinese media. But i also think its better this way, as much as i appreciate the photos and videos from the Liaoning over the past year. But in my view these sea trials shouldn't be about PR and show it should be about serious training and all those journalists and interviewers on board are a distraction. They should just let the crew get on with their job. I hope after she returns we could get to see some videos and pictures of night ops. That's really the thing we haven't seen yet. It would be a new milestone and another step towards mastering all the skills needed for operating a carrier.

Franklin I agree. The media aboard a ship is sometimes a nuisance. Been there done that!

However.. why can't the PLAN use it's own photographers similar to other armed services of the World? Like the USN for instance...What's the problem? I'm assuming the PLAN is holding it's cards close to their chest.

Well as per usual we have to wait and see.

It pertains to Chinese carrier catapult development. Specifically, it says the domestic carrier will have steam catapults because EMALS is regarded as not yet mature enough.

The source is 'POP3 master'. Does anyone know if he's reliable or credible? In other words, does he have a good track record?

There are good technical and financial reasons not to believe him. China has a good system to get aircraft into the air, the ski ramp. The EM cat is the preferred technology and a combination of EM cat and ski ramp would be very good on possible smaller carriers ( compare USN carriers and its America class ). Steam cats are to bridge the gap until the EM cat is developed, at a costs equivalent to hundreds of millions of dollars for say five years? How many years would it take to develop the steam cats from where China is now? Perhaps more than will be necessary to complete the EM cat development.

According to this post, Navy's second carrier, along with the initial one currently being constructed at Dalian, is being built as well. That makes two carriers, one with ski ramp and one possibly without. pop3 is a very reliable military insider.
