For those of us who have been paying attention to the 'mood music' coming from the RN and MOD for the last couple of years, this comes as no surprise at all, but is nonetheless welcome:
In summary SecDef Hammond is saying putting the second CVF into full commission will cost £70million per year, and that's practically loose change. Elsewhere I've heard many asking how the RN will be able to crew two carrires, well we are crewing two now without difficulty.True whilst Illustrious' crew will be able to transfer to Big Liz on a one for one basis, HMS Ocean's crew are about half the number needed to man PoW, it means we only have to find a couple of hundred personnel to bring her to full strength. Not an impossible task by any means.

Yes. On another forum, the published running costs for the Invincible class CVS over several years were averaged and adjusted for inflation, and they were at todays prices around £74million per annum. The QECs were designed to have running costs similar to the Invincibles (excluding cost of the air group), so the figure of £70 million sounds correct.

In short, very slowly and very carefully! Remember the average reactor on a submarine is physically very small, about the size of a household dustbin, and the spent fuel rods themselves will only be a part of that reactor. It isn't an overnight job by any means, and often simply accessing the reactor will mean dismantling much of the infrastructure around the reactor, and doing so whilst some of this structure and pipework for example will itself be highly irradiated means proceding at a snails pace to avoid further contamination or risk to the workers involved.
