PLAN Carrier Construction

Why couldn't this be disinformation campaign, not to convince foreign progessional intelligence services that carrier related construction is really something else, but to simply saturate public domain with confusion, doubt and uncertainty?

Chinese had a history of such elaborate but not too convincing disinformation, remember the casino that would be Liaoning?

Nobody seriously believe it'd be turn into casino for real (Macau's waters are just too shallow for that thing in the first place), the better informed all believe the Chinese would try to make a working carrier out of it, but most put their bets on the Chinese got bogged down on some insurmountable snags here and there, and it'll take them a very long time to get it done.

And the years went by seems to prove them right, until it got the PLAN standard grey paint job on the hull, then the frantic work till Aug 2011...yet all the while outsiders and "experts" such as Pinkov keep telling the world it's just a nice showpiece that can't practically work as a real carrier, blah-blah-blah.

As to when the first Made-In-China carrier begin to build, and where...well there're plenty of theories, though the list of candidates can be shorten via satellite imaging into observing for shipyards with the proper drydocks, on-site data gathering and uploading of photo data is still a must, and the internet policing in China is keeping a close eye on this.

Structure for buildings are far different than a ship, especially carriers. Anyway, it's a butt ugly building IMO.

Actually I don't mind... T is the first letter of my surname... make feel like they are dedicating that building to me :p

We don't know. I would think they would have designed the strength into the J-15 landing gear and undercarriage to withstand a cat launch...but we just do not know at this stage.

In my opinion..if the J-15 is redundant enough an arrested landing it can take a cat shot. The landing gear looks very navalized to me.

Compare to a Hornet.

the translation stated that nuclear fuel for naval reactor has 30 year life span ,which is consider technical achievement.consider that Charles de gaulle Cv to much embarrashment to the French navy has only 7 year rather than 20 year.
but the article do not provide any more data, specially her output. a Chinese technical paper report of a 90mw naval reactor..

The feature on f/a-18's nose gear which betray strengthening for cat shot is the beefy diagonal support strut which transmits the force from the catapult tow bar in front of the gear directly to the fuselage, without the landing gear itself having to absorb any bending stress.

J-15's nose gear is twin wheel rather single as in j-11/Su-27, yes. But it seem identical to the twin nose gear on the Su-30 and Su-33's, neither of which were CAT capable. What is more, the diagonal support strut behind the nose gear, the part that would transmit bulk of catapult force to the fuselage, appears similar to what is on the j-11/Su-27, Su-30, and Su-33. It does not seem like anything has been done either to its beefiness or its geometry to better transmit a large transverse force to the fuselage. This strut certainly appear far less sturdy than the comparable strut on the f/a-18.

This imply j-15 as we see it now is not CAT adapted.

Thanks Chuck!..

Do you feel some minor reinforcement of those struts, particulary the front strut, would make the aircraft more capable of a cat shot? thanks!

It can easily adapt to cat shot using the bridle system without having to redesign the front strut....

Those are the two ways now used to launch aircraft with cats. Even more ways can be imagined and if necessary one or more will be developed.

Hong Kong, "News" August 31, said the Dalian shipyard is building new aircraft carriers, destroyers, Liaoning similar structure, belonging to medium-sized ski - jump conventionally powered aircraft carrier, model 001A. Army fans have recently taken Liaoning ship, it was found next to a large plant in Liaoning ship within a ship bow Liaoning resembles the shadows. (Reference News Network)
so we could accept this toy in Dalian, but what is in Shanghai?
