PLAN anti-ship missile question?

PLAN anti-ship missile question?

YJ-85 anti-ship missile or attack surface?

The difference between the YJ-12 and YJ-18

Type 052D will be armed YJ-62 or YJ-18 ?

Is exist a YJ-84 submarine version ?

Real range of missile YJ series:

YJ-8 40km, YJ-81 80km, YJ-82 120km, KD-88 (YJ-82 for JH-7) 180km, C-802A version exports to Pakistan, but with 180km range enhanced, YJ-83 150-200km, YJ-85 (cruise missile land attack) rumor: 380-400~500km (There are reports that it is only about 250km), YJ-91 120km. YJ-62 = 400km (confirmed all sources), YJ-12 = 150--240---300km (at high altitudes) or maybe 400~500km of course rumor :D (YJ-12 supersonic Mach 4, ramjet. As an improvement of the YJ-91 this is copycat Kh-31)

China's Ashm advertised always have the largest range in the world, but they still depend on Russia and Exocet Ashm clone (YJ-82/83/85)

Andrew Erickson and Co. has a paper on PRC's cruise missile developments from the early days onwards. The paper uses Chinese open source publications and is downloadable in pdf format for handy reference. There's virtually nothing new for readers of SDF, but it's a good read nevertheless.

Overview

China’s military modernization is focused on building modern ground, naval, air, and missile forces capable of fighting and winning local wars under “informatized conditions.” The principal planning scenario has been a military campaign against Taiwan, which would require the PLA to deter or defeat U.S. intervention. Beijing is now broadening this focus to its Near Seas (Yellow, East, and South China seas) more generally.

The PLA has sought to acquire asymmetric “assassin’s mace” technologies and systems to overcome a superior adversary and couple them to the command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems necessary for swift and precise execution of short-duration, high-intensity wars.

A key element of the PLA’s investment in antiaccess/area-denial (A2/AD) capabilities is the development and deployment of large numbers of highly accurate antiship cruise missiles (ASCMs) and land-attack cruise missiles (LACMs) on a range of ground, naval, and air platforms. China’s growing arsenal of cruise missiles and the delivery platforms and C4ISR systems necessary to employ them pose new defense and nonproliferation challenges for the United States and its regional partners. …

There are some naming confusion YJ-82 and YJ-83

YJ-82 is a submarine-launched version, 40km range, never exported. YJ-83 anti-ship version of PLAN basic, version identifier is exported C-802 (does not have any export version call the C-803). Really YJ-8 version identifier is exported C-802 (improved range 40km-120km), YJ-81 is a for the air-launched variant of the YJ-8. KD-88 air-launched version of the YJ-83/C-802.

YJ-82 (submarine launcher) and C-802 aka YJ-8 (export version/Ship, Surface launcher) are two completely different versions

My guess is that YJ-12, YJ-18, and CM-400AKG are related development -- their seeker/electronics are likely to be the same or closely related. Any seeker that works at such high speed is going to be very expensive, and there is really no point duplicating the effort.

CM-400AKG uses YJ-12 seeker with SY-400 SRBM solid fuel engine.

YJ-12 is ramjet powered analog to Yakhont/Brahmos -- almost 1/3 lighter but with more range. Yakhont/Brahmos used intake that looks like Mig-21's -- while it simplifies the air flow during maneuvering, it does has more cross section hence increased air resistance. YJ-12 uses a riskier solution that provides better performance. It wouldn't surprise me if uses miniature DSI intakes to improve performance -- no one else has experience in that except China and US. YJ-12 is likely the next standard long range heavy ASM for 052C, 052D, and future 055.

YJ-18 is essentially replacement for YJ-8 series-- similar size and weight. It's essentially a YJ-83 with a cut down CM-400AKG terminal stage. It's probably the next standard armament for lighter combatants like 054A and 056.

I wouldn't call them being clones. Sure, the specs are similar, but the specs are the result of similar tactical requirements, physics, and technical limitations. At one point that may be a fair accusation, but at this point, not likely. For example, YJ-18 is essentially an analog of Russian Klub missile with supersonic terminal stage, but China never bought that particular version. If China ever got its hand on that, how can it be a copy? At this point, it's easier to use domestic subsystems that performs similarly rather than reverse engineer, which is actually harder than developing new hardware (if you are competent enough to generate the specs).

Here's a view of the missile itself (well, UNA should look similar enough, I hope):

Here's a view of the missile container:

Here's a few more cut-out view of the container with the missile packed inside:

I've never seen this before. The WJ-500. It appears to have some kind of stealth shaping.

Basically it's a cruise type missile with a turbofan engine. From the size and shape I would say it's either a air to surface or air launched anti-ship missile that is sub-sonic. It could also be a target drone since many drones for that purpose shares the same shape.

That's a bit ridiculous, isn't it? It's like saying the Enola Gay was a passenger plane.

Almost all target drones usually look like cruise missiles to begin with (while there are a wide variety of passenger planes. Come to think of it, I think there might have been a passenger conversion of the B-29).
