IMO "maximum rage" and "effective range" are often 2 different things. When manufacturers post specs, it's usually best assumption under ideal conditions. You have to look at real-world operating conditions too.
The F-14's AN/AWG-9 is somewhat "battle proven" as the Iranians used them as mini-AWACS. Under ideal conditions it can scan and tract up to 24 targets from as low as 50 feet to as high as 80,000 feet. It had a frontal-arc of ~210km range & ~280km scan-width. Keep in mind that this is a 30+ year old mechanical slotted array type radar. =/
