It’s not the lense it’s the processing. The processor needs to be powerful enough to maintain resolution, light weight, rugged enough to take the shocks of recoil and being dropped. Well also having enough batter life to operate in combat for a potential operation. It’s a tall order not impossible but tall.

These are good points when discussing digital optics. I personally don't see the point of digital optics outside of night vision myself.

Optics like Vortex XM-157 are much more exciting when it comes to futuristic combat gear.

Aren't digital optics good because they are cheaper to produce and allows them to be put in a small package?

I think the digital optics will become more useful when they start networking the video feeds. Thus providing a capability which traditional systems cannot do. Another possibility is doing processing in the optic like automatic target recognition to assist in tracking targets.

Some day digital optic will be the future where it will be like a game where your comrades can do virtual markers that show up in your scope.

But I agree that it's not mature enough today and maybe more useful in 10 years. Imagine a scope that will have a virtual laser that shows where all your squadmates are aiming without having a detectable laser.
