The USMC have of course gone the way of replacing M249s with M27s, and the debate of how best to conduct suppressive fire is an ongoing one
The USMC has displaced not replace the M249. The M249 is still in use as part of the weapons section of the USMC. In a role closer to the QYJ88.

As I understand it it is still retained in service to be issued when required, but it is not present as part of a squad's standard toe

The rifle squad yes. But the Marines chose it more for mobility, that is to say lighter then the 16 pound empty M249 and could offer rifle fire on par with a M16A4.
I think that the Marines really have been trying to just field a capabilities set well the Army starts planing there next small arms program that will likely shift all 4 services rifle, LMG concepts.
