Well have you ever toughted how field artillery works? They shoot over-the-horizon unlike tank guns which fires so called direct-fire where the tube is elevated in modest angels. But over-the-horizon fire requires tubes to set for much more higher angle. And when the gun is stuffed inside a armoured box, the box (in this case the turret) must be big enough for maxium elevation aple to achive. Also field artillery guns and howitsers tend to be bigger than normal tankguns so that adds the requirement of space.
But We have dedicated question asking thread in the world armed forces section where questions like these should be made...
Anyway, here's an interesting pic. It seems to be the turret of Type 89 120mm Selfpropelled anti-tank gun atop of Type 59 hull...
I don't know wheter it's photoshoped or not, but at least to my eyes it seems quite authentic...
