Even when considering tank on tank duel which will probably be with ROC forces armed with export variant of m1 Abrams and cm11. I dont think the 105 apfsds will have issue with either one. I think they arent expecting going up against full fledge western tank anytime soon so might as well have ammo commonality with all the other 105 that are in service (which most of them will be also used against taiwan) for easier logistic.
I have no idea where these disappointment come from at all since we have picture evidence of the 125 being mounted on the prototype ignoring all the circumstances that prevent fully kitted western tank being active in ROC army and in any meaning full numbers push come to shove they can just up gun the type 100. It just dosent make sense to have a completely different caliber when the 105 dont have any issue dealing with what they will face in the foreseeable futureImo just focusing on Taiwan is maybe a little short sighted when the weapon is supposed to serve for many decades. Who knows maybe the Americans will go crazy and somehow got their M1A2 on Taiwan, or maybe something happens in Korea and PLA have to face M1A2 and K2...etc
I think on the one hand this type-100 system actually represent PLA's thinking in future land warfare, to a lot of people's disappointment tank duel is completely excluded in this vision; On the other hand PLA being a somewhat conservative institution, it would be out of character if they pivot to such a radical doctrine without some backup plan, so I believe there should be a more traditional Type-99 replacer in the work

Where did this come from?we have picture evidence of the 125 being mounted on the prototype
Didnt we have a picture posted in this thread of 2 tank in unfinished stage with 2 different cannon.Since when?
A heavy tank replacement is in the works to replace the Type-99A, no?Imo just focusing on Taiwan is maybe a little short sighted when the weapon is supposed to serve for many decades. I imagine the ZTZ-100 is going to be employed in every battlefield other than the high Himilayas. A lighter tank is just going to be easier to operate than a heavier one, and the infrastructre that currently supports the ZTZ-96 should be easy to switch to support the new tank.Imo just focusing on Taiwan is maybe a little short sighted when the weapon is supposed to serve for many decades. At the rate that the PLA is modernizing, I imagine that there's a replacement for everything in the works! They're probably going to take their sweet time with the ZTZ-99 one though. There's simply no pressing need to replace it, and they're going to want a lot of time to thoroughly evaluate the ZTZ-100 in all of its roles and to see which of its systems should be retained for a new tank and what needs further work.I think on the one hand this type-100 system actually represent PLA's thinking in future land warfare, to a lot of people's disappointment tank duel is completely excluded in this vision; On the other hand PLA being a somewhat conservative institution, it would be out of character if they pivot to such a radical doctrine without some backup plan, so I believe there should be a more traditional Type-99 replacer in the work
