Again suggesting MBTs forgo all types of armor and rely purely on APS and drone defenses. If this is realistic than everyone else would've been doing it(or atleast trying), ATGMs/RPG is still a big threat to MBTs and APS can fail as seen in Palestine numerous amount of time. Good base armor is absolutely still required as a fallback against drones/ATGMs/RPGs and the occational tank on tank combat.
Any tank that doesn't have its own air defense gun/missile and radar is going to die from drones. Its as simple as that. Armors are no longer necessary in my opinion.

In Ukraine, Russians are attacking with motorcycles since everything else have proven to be useless.

Each tank needs to be its own air defense, missile defense and maybe some armor to protect against small arms fire. That's it.

Tank guns are only getting better and other threats are also getting more potent. Is it possible to put on armour that can withstand some meter long rounds from the Abrams or some future 130-140mm gun without making your tank weight 45+ tons or forgo protection in other areas? Are we getting into another Cold War situation where people ditch armour all together -ish? Especially with drones, maybe it’s a good idea to have base armour distributed more evenly around the tank to protect against drones and other shaped charges instead of concentrating too much armour at the front or weighing too much. maybe having front armour just strong enough to stop an apfsds past APS at most?

If they develop their APS well enough to intercept and degrade oncoming APFSDS prior to secondary layer (ERA), then finally the third and last layer which is composite armor then I believe that is the design philosophy they are going for.

Either way, we've already seen this tank with and without an additional armor package so to make up for armor deficiencies they'll use the aforementioned armor package. But they should definitely work on making an upscaled and revised replacement for the ZTZ-99A (hopefully single piece 125mm with isolated ammo stores)

What major sacrafices? The reason why the term “MBT” is used is because we’ve been able to build tanks that are fast, powerful, and well armoured. ERA cannot replace composite, it can only help, putting ERA on a bmp-1 will do nothing.
What major sacrifices? Weight, mobility, and cost of course.

How many tanks and armour vehicles were destroyed by APFSDS in Ukraine?
This is such a -

right yes because all future wars will be medium intensity conflicts with very minor force concentrations mostly engaged in protracted static warfare.

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but just because there was an Iran Iraq war, doesn't mean that everything that follows will be the Iran Iraq war, or anything even remotely similar.

Higher troop concentrations without adequate means to suppress adversity drones and artillery only leads to mass casualties.
And I’m sure that adequate means of suppression will appear sooner or later, either through counter technology or finally adapting ground combat doctrine to match the pace of 21st century informatization warfare.

Artillery, machineguns, and spotter planes didn’t keep people who really wanted to kill each other permanently confined in trenches for the entire 20th century.
