That's one of the major reasons why I like Liu Xiaofei's commentary. There is a kind of a diminishing returns in terms of economics when it comes to training soldiers. Having enough of them is a another story....
Tis why you see the proliferation of small in size but highly trained units in the NATO system. The cost of raising the proficiency and training from a regular troop to an elite level is so high that most countries choose to invest it only for their SOF.
Was thinking that if China currently have 10+% of youngsters being unemployed, should the PLA implement selective, contract-based conscription among those unemployed youngsters instead? Offer them good salary, benefits and treatments on top of job opporunities.
