Can anyone help identify the device in the image below? What does it do? Thanks in advance.

If I had to take a guess, I would say it's an IR laser designator and/or illuminator or a laser dazzler.

B.E. Meyers, an American company makes a lot of similar laser designator and dazzler products, in case you wanted to find similar devices for reference.

Here is an interesting pic: a chad PLA soldier sitting before a wall that reads “Punch the Green Berets, Kick the Navy Seals” :p

According to some comments on Bilibili, it’s a new special force from PLA.

Sorry for the low resolution, I couldn’t find the original pic… the photo comes from a comment on Bilibili…

Are we sure that the picture isn’t from a fan film that is a bit too enthusiastic? A professional organization like the PLA definitely doesn’t tolerate such immaturity within their ranks.

I don’t think it’s fake, because one episode of 观棋有语 also mentioned this (from episode 339). You can find it on bilibili.

Regardless, am I the only one who thinks this is just a light hearted way to motivate the troops? No need to take this so seriously.

It just reminds me of this:

And the time in which US troops looked down upon Chinese forces in the Korean War despite struggling against North Korean Forces during the initial stages of the war.

And how the Russians got their noses broken by Ukrainian forces during the initial stages of the conflict.

I could go on and on. However all of them point to one thing: having absolute confidence in your own skills and training is one thing, but infantilizing your enemy is another. The latter is extremely dangerous regardless of how light hearted it is.

Then again it is possible the supposed spec ops unit did this to beat out the innate fear of US SOF that was hyped up by Hollywood and other US entertainment industries. However, there are other much better ways to do that.

BEIJING, Jan. 9 -- The Eastern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) organized the joint combat-readiness security patrol and real-combat exercise involving troops of multiple services and arms in the waters and airspace around the Taiwan Island on January 8, said Army Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the Eastern Theater Command (ETC). The exercise focused on land strikes, sea assaults and other subjects, aiming to test the troops' joint combat capability and resolutely counter the collusive and provocative acts of the external forces and the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.

In a first of such move in 2023, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) announced on Sunday it conducted joint alert patrol and combat exercises around the island of Taiwan on the day countering collusions between external and "Taiwan independence" forces, with Chinese mainland experts saying that the PLA will only intensify its drills this year if provocations do not stop.

Focusing on practicing land attack and sea assault, the PLA Eastern Theater Command organized cross-service joint alert patrol and realistic combat-oriented exercises in sea and aerial areas around the island of Taiwan on Sunday, Senior Colonel Shi Yi, a spokesperson at the PLA Eastern Theater Command, said in a statement on Sunday.

, shortly after US President Joe Biden signed the latest National Defense Authorization Act that marked the first time the US government will finance weapons for the island of Taiwan.

The drills on Sunday aimed at testing the troops' joint operational capabilities as well as countering collusions between and provocations by external and "Taiwan independence" forces, Shi said.

While Shi did not name the exact collusions and provocations, observers noted a number of military interactions between the US and the island of Taiwan since the PLA Eastern Theater Command's last exercise in late December. The US announced the

on Thursday.

The PLA's large-scale exercises around the island of Taiwan has become routine, and they take place not only when the PLA announces them, but on a daily basis, a Beijing-based military expert who requested anonymity told the Global Times on Sunday.

If external interference and "Taiwan independence" forces continue to provoke, the PLA will also intensify its drills, which not only warn them, but also practically enhance combat readiness in safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, the expert said.

In 2022, the PLA sent 1,727 planes into the island of Taiwan's self-proclaimed air defense identification zone, compares with about 960 incursions in 2021 and 380 in 2020, AFP reported, citing releases by the defense authority on the island.

The AFP report noted that the growth in PLA aircraft sorties in 2022 could be a result of the PLA's response to then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's provocative visit on the island in August.

Kevin McCarthy, who was elected as the new House Speaker on Saturday, should also understand the signal the PLA has sent, analysts said.

I don't think it's so one sided. Descelation is a two sided issue, not one.
China is really stubborn when it comes to negotiating about their territory. Mainly due to their experience in ww2 and Korean war.

They will not care if it sets back relations if it means keeping even small amounts of territory. This was how it worked in the SCS. Instead of even giving the smallest concessions, China just waits out until the other claimants get tired and need to reestablish ties in order to keep their economies running.

Russia is the only case of China putting territory on the table, and that is probably due to the twin factors of Russia being a potential highly useful junior partner and that Russia has enough nukes to do MAD with China.

For better or worse, its unlikely that China will give India anything.

Personally I think flexibility is better because the areas are non-inhabited anyways, China should trade land to India in exchange for keeping India permanently in the Russian military reliance purgatory, until India is reformed enough to properly join SCO as a military ally. It is a maximum geopolitical yield deal for China in exchange for territory that has no resources, no population.
