i got a whole stack of those old movies at home, they are definitely better made than hollywood. the new movies all try to add a bit of everything in there for a broader audience, like some romance, some sex scenes, some comedy. in the old movies, it's all about kicking ass.

Well like all war heros, they usually if not always end up dead in the battlefield. Thats why i always tell my little boys and girls...."Don't try to be a hero".

Hi im not exactly new to the forum but i am...(been readin but not registrating). First of all i'd like to say that the new forum was a big improvement over the old good job admins/mods.:)

Anyways onto the topic of PLA heroes...

well there's a famous one that people here have not mentioned (correct me if wrong) his name is 王成. (wang cheng) The main movie that depicted him is 英雄儿女. Anyways just thought i'd include him. He jumped down into a crowd of enemies with an explosive charge when surrounded, killing himself and numerous enemies.

Another one during the korean war was 罗盛教 (luo sheng jiao) from the PVP. During the winter of 1952, kids were playing on a frozen lake, but the lake did not freze solid in the middle and a kid fell in. He took off his coat and jumped in after the kid and after numerous minutes of search forced the kid out onto the ice, but as a result he died of hypothermia or some text books said he drowned.

My personal favourite 杨靖宇, (yang jing yu) during the sino-japanese war of october 1938.
one day while exploring a hill alone, he encountered a vastly superior japanese platoon. Armed with all he had (2 pistols and a few grenades) he took out as many japanese soldiers as possible when at last he was shot to death. When the japanese doctors (depicted in text books as "japanese rouges") performed an autopsy on his corpse and found that there was only cotton, bark and wild grass roots in his stomach. This is shown as a great example of a revolutionary who endured all physical hardships and at last is glorified as a hero.

4 gun posts and 5 machine guns
i wonder if a guy that knocked out 8 posts and 10 machinegun positions and blew up a bridge and DIDNT get killed himself can be considered a hero in china? As if the chinese love dead heroes.

yes they certainly can, however the main emphasis of those heroes is that they sacrificed their lives for the revolution and that they are glorified through death. Those who do not die in battle can also be considered as heroes and be awarded with medals etc...but people tends to remember the ones that sacrificed their lives for the country & its people.

the best part of the movie "英雄儿女" was when 王成 screamed into the radio "向我开炮" or in english "fire the artillery at me". that is truly a heroic moment. the idea is basically, he's the only guy left on a hill that the "imperialist americans" trying to take, and he's out of ammo for all the guns, out of grenades and got nothing left but a pipe bomb. so he screamed into his radio and told the artillery guys to bombard his location and not to worry about him, since the americans are about to take his position, and he jumped into a group of enemies blowing himself up with the enemies.:china: :china:

and check out my new 70s style chinese soldier avatar :china:

hmm truely a heroic thing to say at that moment...i would of said the same, if im going to die anyways i might as well do as much damage as i can to the enemy before dying. But what ALWAYS made me wonder is WHERE DID HE GET THE PIPE BOMB/ EXPLOSIVE CHARGE?? did he pick it up from a corpse pile or something?? I might just watch the film again just to make sure :)

Oh and another thing, how do you people put pictures next to your name? i want one next to mine too...and pigsigma your current picture looks way better than the original (no offence to the original)
