Hi im not exactly new to the forum but i am...(been readin but not registrating). First of all i'd like to say that the new forum was a big improvement over the old good job admins/mods.
Anyways onto the topic of PLA heroes...
well there's a famous one that people here have not mentioned (correct me if wrong) his name is 王成. (wang cheng) The main movie that depicted him is 英雄儿女. Anyways just thought i'd include him. He jumped down into a crowd of enemies with an explosive charge when surrounded, killing himself and numerous enemies.
Another one during the korean war was 罗盛教 (luo sheng jiao) from the PVP. During the winter of 1952, kids were playing on a frozen lake, but the lake did not freze solid in the middle and a kid fell in. He took off his coat and jumped in after the kid and after numerous minutes of search forced the kid out onto the ice, but as a result he died of hypothermia or some text books said he drowned.
My personal favourite 杨靖宇, (yang jing yu) during the sino-japanese war of october 1938.
one day while exploring a hill alone, he encountered a vastly superior japanese platoon. Armed with all he had (2 pistols and a few grenades) he took out as many japanese soldiers as possible when at last he was shot to death. When the japanese doctors (depicted in text books as "japanese rouges") performed an autopsy on his corpse and found that there was only cotton, bark and wild grass roots in his stomach. This is shown as a great example of a revolutionary who endured all physical hardships and at last is glorified as a hero.
