Wow, a fighter engine nozzle really does look like a chrysanthemum. All the discussion on the J-20 thread has ruined it for me!
Has anyone seen a larger version of this photo? What's the story behind this and the context: when, where, what project?
The banner in the back ground says: "celebrating the successful conclusion of XXX's flight test/experiment..." Unfortunately, the characters on the guy's jacket are not readable. The logo on the jacket kind of looks like CASIC's, but I'm not sure.
Henri K. has a pretty detailed article on it:
I'll summarize what I can:
The picture you posted is allegedly of the celebration following the May 12th test of the "XXX-XX" craft from CASC.
- A particular NOTAM on September 19, 2018, caught Henri's attention, mostly because it covered a massive area (1800 km x 500 km) and is two hours long (as opposed to just 1 hour for previous ballistic missile tests)
- The launch area is supposedly Taiyuan Space Center which is covered by the NOTAM
- This particular NOTAM covers the same area as the NOTAMs issued on May 12 and June 12 of this year (2018)
- While the nature of the May & June tests are unknown, it is suspected that the test subject is a "XXX-XX" craft designed by CASC (at least for the May test), and that this test was successful
Henri K. also entertains the possibility that the NOTAM involves a large-scale military exercise not unlike the one conducted in July 2017.
So it's CASIC then... Thank you.
