I don't think that's an advantage inherent BECAUSE of turboprops. Aerodynamics and the wing design play a far larger role than engine choice. IIRC the C-17 has a better STOL capability than the far smaller and turboprop Y-9. The only advantage turboprops have in austere basing is less risk of FOD.You are all forgetting one big advantage of transport-based turboprops - austere/remote basing. Props can use much shorter runways than jets.
