A magazine illustration. Take it with a grain of salt.

Does Y-8Q have capability to carry AShM like other major MPAs? And is it a good idea to have that ability?

We know that the P-3 can load AGM-84 Harpoon or AGM-84E SLAM on wings pylons even dumb bombs and AGM-65 Maverick. It's just the case that a lot of countries have only one long range maritime aircraft doing multiple jobs. So you need to put multiple systems in one aircraft. Jack of all trades tend to be less efficient in each functions than a specialized aircraft doing one function..

It's not the function of Y-8Q to hunt surface ships, it's specialized in doing anti-submarine warfare. Maybe it can help but H-6J have that job of launching AShM and hunting surface ships. So it would be splitting the apple or redundancy.

Y-8 from Southern TC practicing dropping ASW torpedoes on target:

Those aren't torpedoes.

Those should be the depth charges instead. The shape and profile should be the main obvious differentiator. Depth charges are stubbier, torpedoes are relatively longer and deploy a parachute shortly after launch.

Not to mention the targets in question aren't even floating.

I see, is there still a valid reason for using depth charges over torpedoes for ASW in the modern era?

The depth charges they're using have a form of guidance.

Personally I only imagine they'd be useful in niche roles, and torpedoes would be the primary more useful weapon of choice.

But that's also the reason why we don't get many videos or pictures of KQ-200s launching torpedoes compared to depth charges, for the same reason we get more pictures and videos of PLA fighters launching unguided rockets than guided A2G weapons.
