Question, since Y-8Q is an MPA, and the main radar is obviously in the big lower radome, what is the purpose of this smaller fighter-size radar? Just for additional airborne threat detection/navigation?
Probably a weather radar.
Yes, so far it is called Y-8GX-15, and according to Huitong "the exact function of this variant is still unknown but it is speculated to have been developed for PLAN"? However the PLAN has no suitable tanker for such a big aircraft??
Huitong's blog is also now saying that new KJ200As are being built, although it is not entirely clear if these are indeed new or are modified KJ200s. Either way it seems a bit of an odd way to use resources now KJ500 is available in considerable numbers. Can anyone shed light on this?
