I think it's probably time to start a dedicated thread on this.

Just some news
MOSCOW, July 3 (RIA Novosti) - Some 6,500 troops will take part in large-scale
counterterrorism exercises August 9-17 conducted by a regional security and
economic group dominated by Russia and China, Russia's deputy Ground Forces
commander said Tuesday.

The Peace Mission 2007 exercise, held by members of the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization (SCO) in the Volga-Urals military district, will involve 500 combat
vehicles from Russia and China, about 2,000 Russian and 1,600 Chinese
personnel, two paratrooper companies (around 100 men each) from Tajikistan and
Kazakhstan, and a platoon from Kyrgyzstan.

"The exercise will involve practically all SCO members for the first time in its
history," Colonel-General Vladimir Moltenskoi said, adding that Uzbekistan
would be represented by a group of staff officers.

Established in 2001 as a non-military alliance, the SCO initially set dealing
with Islamic extremism and other security threats in Central Asia as its goal,
but has since expanded its scope to include cooperation in disaster relief and
trade.

The SCO never held a full-scale military exercise involving all its member
states, but Russia and China have already held several military joint exercises
within the framework of the organization, including the Peace Mission 2005
exercise.

During the August exercise, Russia and China will deploy 36 and 46 aircraft,
respectively. Both countries will contribute six Il-76 military transports each
to perform simulated airborne assaults, Moltenskoi said.

Participating units will start arriving in Russia July 27, the official said.

The group, which comprises Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and
Uzbekistan, is largely viewed as a counter to NATO in the region. The
organization also lists Iran, Pakistan, India and Mongolia as observers.

However, the Russian general said the upcoming exercises were not aimed at third
countries and were mainly intended to practice troops interoperability in
counterterrorism operations.

Russia's Security Council Secretary Igor Ivanov said in May that the
organization, which is often referred to as the Shanghai-Six, focused on
fighting drug and arms trafficking, terrorism and separatism, and was never
intended to become a military bloc.

"The issue of transforming the organization into a military alliance has not
been brought up," he said.
it confirms China bringing 46 aircraft which includes 6 IL-76. The only other aircraft mentioned officially is JH-7A. If we get a full regiment of 28, that means there are 12 additional ones? I'm still not convinced we will see flankers or J-10, but we will see.

Somehow i really doubt that we will see J-10 in this exercise because i sense the purpose of this exercise is aimed at co-operation and compatibility between these different militaries. And the greatest military threat to these countries are nearby religious extremist which requires the response of SOF units. Therefore it is logical to use this exercise to get some practise for the SOF units in whatever it is that they need practise with. So the aircrafts involved in this exercise might be mostly related to the needs of these SOF units, such as IL-76 for transporting them, JH-7A involvment makes sense since it can provide air support and practise working with SOF on the ground, the rest of the aircrafts maybe mostly helicopters which also works closely with troops on the gournd.

there are two possibilities thats either J-10 or FC-1. but i think J-10 is more likely because FC-1 is still in development stage with the electronic systems while j-10 has already entered service with PLAAF.

I agreed with your analysis, however this type of exercise would be a good time to show off some of your newest equipment and capability. It act as a good way of deterrence.

From business point of view, it would be a great time to show other nations of the capability of the J-10 and maybe it will land some orders from foreign markets. So from I believe the chinese will be showing off their J-10 and I kind of think they will making official debut for the WZ-10 too.

yeah, but the thing is non of the countries participating are interested in J-10. And WZ-10 is even less likely, since it's not even in service yet.

Yes, none of the countries participating is interested, what about those countries that will be invited as observers? And I believe that there will be publicity of the exercise so many other nations will get to see the performance of the aircraft in real exercises.

Opportunity to Showcase J-10

I agree. The one element that would play in favor of a J-10 appearance at these exercises, is the opportunity to demonstrate the airplane's capabilities to observers such as Pakistan. Pakistan does have observer status at these exercises, although the composition of Pakistan's delegation has not been announced.

A couple more articles on the upcoming exercises from other sources:

I would expect to see more information surface as the date for the maneuvers approaches.

OSCOW. July 16 (Interfax-AVN) - Ninety-two aircraft will take part
in the Peace Mission 2007 exercises of the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization (SCO) scheduled to take place in the Chelyabinsk region in
August, Russian Air Force Commander Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin told
Interfax-AVN.
"Six Ilyushin Il-76s, nine Sukhoi Su-25s, 13 Mil Mi-24s and 18 Mil
Mi-8s will represent Russia in Peace Mission 2007," he said.
China will assign six military cargo planes, eight JH-7As, and 16
helicopters, JG-9W and Mil Mi-17s. A woman will pilot one of the Chinese
Ilyushin Il-76.
"The aircraft will take part in seven drills, including
reconnaissance, fire support, landing and shooting at enemy forces,"
Zelin said.
The Il-76 planes will transport more than 20 vehicles and over 200
paratroopers.
Chinese aircraft will start landing at Shagol and Uprun airfields
on July 27-28, he said.
so basically, the only aerial assets sent are IL-76, JH-7A, Z-9G and Mi-17s. I guess there is no need for fighter jets.

Maybe to be exspected due to the nature of the mission. If one needs airborne aircover for such tasks to be trained, the scenario would exspect opposing air threats. Wich in turn can only come from other airforces, hence states.
So, for the sake of peace mission, they do it without fighters.
I guess they also don't need/want to show off their new assets and capabilities yet.
