Participate in CTF-150?

Okay folks, this is more of a what if question. But do you think it be worthwhile for PLAN/China to participate in Combine Task Force 150, the coalition of naval ships off the coast of Somalia clamping down on piracy? Would that foster better naval relations for PLAN as well as provide it with some mission experience? Would the US navy permit this as a way to further relations and to get a better gauge of PLAN capabilities?

If they want to lob some missiles or ordinance at Al Quida in the area (and they have good reason to), then I say let them come on and do so.

It would foster better relations and would give them an operational opportunity I am sure they would like, and would, as you say, allow other nations to guage that capability accordingly.

Win-win-win. But I doubt it will happen because of political considerations on both sides of that equation.

....Coupled with the fact that the PLAN has never held any major operations with any of the other Navies involved. Plus there is a matter of logistics...In time the PLAN should be able to participate in such an operation.

Politics would be the biggest hurdle as mentioned, especially since CTF-150 also provides support to Operation Iraqi Freedom. But as for logistics, I would assume other navies would provide the courtesy if PLAN does participate? And even if not, if PLAN is part of 150, then they would be based out of Djibouti, logistics shouldn't be that hard for one or two ships?

I think other Navies could supply logistical support for the PLAN. However the big stumbling block would be ,as I stated, that the PLAN has never operated with any other navy. They would have to enter a port to just refuel. They would not be then able to stay at sea any lenght of time.

The operation would be a good oppourtinity for the PLAN to flex it's muscle.

PLAN fans may think this is a good idea for the PLAN to do this but would the PRC be willing to send it's ships on such a mission. Remember during the Boxing Day Tsumami of 2004 the PLAN did not muster a single ship to help out during the relief effort.

You're right, PRC may not be any more willing in this scenario as on Tsunami of 2004. However, this one does suit their interests more because 1) it's a military mission as opposed to humanitarian, and 2) it potentially helps secure the vital sea lanes for oil which PRC is now also addicted to like the rest of the industrialized nations. In fact, isn't that one of the purposes for expanding PLAN, to help China secure it's energy lanes? But at the end of the day, I already know this possibility is nil, it's just one of those what if questions. :D

Can PLAN leave a few warships in the sea and let a few replenish ships travel between the harbor and the warships?

Of course they could. But the PLAN is not going to commit their ships to CTF 150. They just donot have the experience in this sort of operation.

The PLAN wouldn't do it because the chinese would be embarassed when other navies realize just how incompetent they are when it comes to long-range deployments. The PLAN is a brown water navy folks.

I wouldnt say that at least. The PLAN has a pretty reasonable fleet and some advanced technology. IN reality, anything goes and i feel that a lot of us back home arent actually understanding that tecnology only plays a part in warfare. Many other factors also affect an outcome of a battle. so although the PLAN are "brown water navy folks." they are well displined, trained and pack a punch.
