In an ideal world we'd see the PN procure some 6-8 multimission frigates in the 3500-4000t range with proper area wide air defence capabilities. However, given the country's precarious economic situation, we'd be very lucky to see even 4 such ships. A drawdown on internal campaigns in FATA and a completion of IMF austerity payments would do wonders to free up financing. Not just for defence, but actual economic development (geared to nurture high value exports and healthier tax base)

Media is reporting that Pakistan has signed an agreement with Russian authorities for 5 Mi-35s...

But why only 5???

Plus they already finalized the deal for 15 AH-1Z Vipers from USA. However, no news on Z10s yet. We know that 3 Z10 were in Pakistan for evaluation.

So a very good addition of 20 attack helicopters to PAK army Aviation....

Mi35 is part of the Hind family of choppers, that means along side the rockets and cannon it can carry 6-8 troops. That makes it less a dedicated attacker and more a multitask platform. The 5 Mi35 might be intended less for attack chopper roles and targeted for use by Pakistani special forces.
The organic fire power of the Hinds combined with the troop capacity and integrated sensors, could allow it to be used for self escort into trouble spots where they could deploy there troops and if need be support the mission with CAS.

The 3 Z10 were evaluated but it if the Pakistanis have the AH1Z coming then they may have found the Z10 didn't suit there needs or wants.

I generally like the idea of the Hinds for all of the above reasons and more, but 5 is too few, even for SpecOps. Either commit properly or don't bother I think.

Although those 5 may just be the first batch, and if the Pakistanis find them to their likely, future, additional buys are probably forthcoming.

I believe those AH1Zs would have been covered by the US military aid budget, so in effect, they are free for Pakistan. The Z10s would have to be on a totally different level to the AH1Zs to beat free. ;)

The US originally didn't want to include those Zulu Cobras under the scheme, but looks like the sight of Chinese Z10s in Pakistan made them rapidly reconsider.

Perhaps Pakistan and China just teamed up and played America to score some free Zulu Cobras for Pakistan at the cost of shipping some Z10s to Pakistan and pack...Not a bad return on investment if that was the case.
