Oversized Frigates

Frigates are not the only ships being super sized or renamed for political reasons.

Japan calls the 9,000 ton Osumi Class Landing ships "LSTS" and insists that they can only support one helicopter. They also have plans for a 15,000 ton "Through deck helicopter Destroyer". The Israeli Eilat Sa'ar V Corvette has the fire power of a frigate or a small destroyer. Also, British VSTOL Carriers were called Through Deck Cruisers.

.

They can only support helicopter, they have no hanger, no aviation ordance nor other capacity to support the common missunderstandment over its carrier like looks.....

no, it has fire power of common missile boat with corvette level CIWS systems. Frigate would need to have DP gun, point defence or limited area defence SAM, long range sonar and ten tonner Helicopter...

Most common missile boats don't have 16 sea to sea missiles (8 Harpoons and 8 Gabriels), 6 Torpedoe tubes and 64 sea to air missiles (Barak, limited area defense) or support a medium helicopter. The Eliat can be fitted with a 76mm gun in place of the CIWS but usually sails with the CIWS.

The original plan called for both the CIWS and the 76mm gun. This was purportedly modified due to stability problems.

Clearly, the Eilat is far more than a missile boat with a CIWS system

Yes, I realize the Japanese claim it lacks a hanger and supports one helicopter. Yet the vessel appears to have alot more space than its public purpose. I doubt that this space would be wasted in a war. It probably supports 3-4 large helicopters, but in peace time carries one.

The vessel is a "pocket" asault ship that has been classed as an LST for political purposes

It has fligth deck, for sure...and island superstructure...but thats all. It simply is a dock landing ship whit most of the volume taken simply by the vehicle deck...no hangar, no lifts (except small equipment elevator)...so I wouldnt even say it can support a single helicopter, mere refuel...

Where does the ship normally carry the helicopter? It can't be transported on the deck all the time because of weather and maintenance. If the helicopter is carried below the deck, the ship must have a lift capable of bringing a Chinook size helicopter up to the flight deck.

My guess is that there is a large "utility storage space" below the deck. In war time, this space would hold additional helicopters and their support equipment. The Japanese might even practice 3-4 helicopter operations in remote areas where uninvited guests will not see the ship being used this way.

well as there isent a hangar or any space suitable for it, I could say that It cannot adequotely support even single helicopter...Naval community use the word support to descripe ships like Alreigh Burkes that have helipad, and refueling station, but not a hangar...

but you can check the ships information yourselve and discover that it isent anything more than LPD that looks like carrier.

I did and.... you are right. There are no helicopter lifts or a permanent place for one helicopter let alone four.

Even still, the ship should be classed as a small LSD, not an LST.

Cryptic, have you been talking with BLUEJACKET? Sounds like something he would post..

The Osumi class JMSDF LST has no real hangar. Golly has already stated>>> It does have a vehicle storage area below the flight deck . The elevator is to small to lift a operational helo. It is not a closet LPH.

If what you said is true because Japan is a free and open country these statements of yours would have been exposed. I'm sure the ship was designed to assist the JMSDF DDH16 with amphibous, ASW & Humanitarian operations.
