I assure you that it is entirely lore accurate.
There are many practical benefits as well. The gas mask not only looks intimidating but can filter out tear gas as well, allowing unlimited teargasing of protestors during crackdowns. It also hides the agent’s identity much better than some flimsy scarf of bandana that could be pulled off. It also has built in night vision so it allows for all weather crackdown of anti-fa/libs. The helmet can deflect bricks/rocks thrown by protestors as well as small arms fire, and the combat armor plating provides similar protection to other parts of the body.
True, but still, having ICE wear it would kinda ruin the style for me. It's like when the uncool kid starts copying the cool kids' style, and it no longer becomes cool, it's cringe.
Also, it may scare the Canadians if they start going full Fallout. The only thing that would be more on the nose would be them dressing like a gestapo.
