If I remember correctly, the reason for the temporary ban was because intel's supply chain included companies that were affected by recent sanctions from the US. Intel just needed a few weeks to find new suppliers.

Correct. I think I read once that the reason the previous sanctions against Huawei barely worked was because American and Taiwanese chip producers actively worked with Huawei to find loopholes. In this trade war, the US government is fighting both China and it's own companies.If Intel can do this, why not TSMC, they had a FAB in Nanjing. I dont know what ASML DUV Lithograph they used , but if you value your customer you will find a way to fill its demand, money talks, That's why I admired the entrepreneur spirit of the Americans.

Despite all the news about China's technological development, China still has a way to go. Still behind Japan in R&D spending. Hopefully this is in nominal prices, which would mean that China is closer than shown here.
