Chinese quantum physicist receives ZEISS Research Award

HEFEI, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Renowned Chinese quantum physicist Pan Jianwei is this year's ZEISS Research Award for his contributions to the field of optical quantum information, according to the University of Science and Technology of China where he works as a professor.

One of the most remarkable results of Pan's research is the distribution of entangled photons over a distance of 1,200 km, by far the longest distance ever reached, ZEISS said in an announcement on its website, noting that he has also contributed significantly to the development of optical quantum computing.

ZEISS is a technology enterprise operating in the fields of optics and optoelectronics. The award is presented every two years to those who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in the field of optics or photonics.

The award will be presented to Pan in 2021 due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, ZEISS said. Enditem

Not sure whether to put this here or in US Economy thread.

Another "shoot yourself in the foot" case by the Trump administration. The US banned American companies from working with Huawei. But Huawei continues to work with international bodies to develop 5G standard, while the US companies self sidelined themselves. Now they are scrambling to get back into the game. From the article :

The U.S. Department of Commerce is close to signing off on a new rule that allows U.S. companies to work with China’s Huawei Technologies on setting standards for next generation 5G networks, people familiar with the matter said.

Engineers in some U.S. technology companies stopped engaging with Huawei to develop standards after the Commerce Department blacklisted the company last year. The listing left companies uncertain about what technology and information their employees could share with Huawei, the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker.

That has put the U.S. at a disadvantage, say industry and government officials. In standards setting meetings, where protocols and technical specifications are developed that allow equipment from different companies to function together smoothly, Huawei gained a stronger voice as U.S. engineers sat back in silence.

Damn, I didn't want them to realize until all that was done and it was too late. Someone needs to pay a guy to whisper in Trump's ear, "That's giving up like a little b----. You gonna run away from this like you ran away from Vietnam? Huawei, Europe, and all the liberals who work at Silicon Valley are your enemies; I heard them getting together making fun of how small your hands were last night. Be tough on them and you can WIN!"

Maybe they can get the same guy who told Trump, "Ever seen the movie "It"? Coronavirus is just like that; it feeds on fear. If everybody hangs out at mass rallies without masks, it will see that nobody's scared and disappear like a miracle by April."

Coronavirus helps China pull ahead in the 5G race
The world's No. 2 economy to account for 60% of global 5G handsets in 2020

TAIPEI -- In February, as cities throughout Sichuan Province were locked down to combat the spread of the coronavirus, unmanned drones circled the skies, broadcasting pandemic prevention measures, spraying disinfectant, and even conducting thermal imaging checks on residents.

Some 1,800 km away in Beijing, 5G-powered drones dispatched face masks near the Beijing National Stadium and delivered hot meals to hospital patients to reduce human contact. In Wuhan, the original epicenter of the outbreak, hundreds of driverless vans continue to sanitize the streets.

These are just a few examples of how China has harnessed ultrafast 5G networks to fight the deadly virus -- and pull ahead of the West in a key technological battleground.

Next-generation 5G networks promise fast, low-latency data transfer speeds, enabling a wide range of futuristic applications. Beijing began accelerating 5G deployment last year as tensions with Washington heated up over trade and technology issues. More recently President Xi Jinping earmarked 5G as one of the key targets for special government support to help reinvigorate the economy.

Far from derailing Beijing's ambitions, the coronavirus has given them a shot in the arm by providing the missing piece to the 5G puzzle: how to monetize the new technology.

"The COVID-19 crisis has turned out surprisingly to be a big opportunity for China to quickly test a lot of 5G applications -- including drones, driverless cars, unmanned stores and even 5G phones-- which no one knew how to use effectively last year before the pandemic," Wallace Hsu, an analyst with Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute monitoring Chinese state policies.

In addition to unmanned drones and vans, newly deployed 5G networks have helped online education providers broadcast more than 1.57 million classes, while in several Beijing high schools, teachers conducted exams remotely using cloud computing.

The medical field has found even more uses for 5G. More than 100 hospitals that have adopted 5G systems to do remote medical consultation amid the coronavirus outbreak. Doctors stationed in Zhejiang Province even used the technology to remotely control a robot to conduct an ultrasound test on a COVID-19 patient 700 km away in a hospital in Wuhan.
...

China aims to build and operate at least 600,000 5G base stations across the country by the end of 2020, and it had already reached nearly a third of that target by the end of the first quarter of this year, according to data from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
...

"Apart from China, the 5G deployment in the rest of the world is basically affected because of the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Plans for 5G spectrum auctions such as in Spain, Italy, France and Austria have been put on hold," Kelly Hsieh, a telecom analyst at TrendForce, told Nikkei. "Moreover, China is using national policy to drive the realization of 5G technology, while in the U.S. and South Korea--among the early markets for 5G-- are more like consumer-driven markets. It is hard for these two countries to be fast without a killer application to attract consumers using 5G."

A flip flop .... just expected from this administration

as simple as use translation on your browser
For some unknown reason., I can't do that on my google. Only way for me is to copy and paste to google translate in a different window.
By the way, how do you enable translation on your browser? Mine don't always appear. In non english sites, there is an option to translate to english but not in SDF.

This Electric Jet Engine Could Lead to Carbon-Neutral Air Travel

It's still in its prototype phase, but it would help alleviate climate change rates

is turning more and more toward electricity and away from fossil fuels, so may the days of carbon-neutral air travel be just around the corner for us. As fossil fuels are at the same time unsustainable and unsafe, new methods moving away from using them are needed.

Now,

has created a prototype jet engine that's able to propel itself forward only by using electricity. No fossil fuels in sight.

Electric jet engines

The device, created by researchers from the

, compresses air and ionizes it using microwaves. This then generates plasma that thrusts the engine forward.

This means that someday planes could only need electricity and the air around them in order to fly. The main push for the team to create this new type of engine was our planet and its rather dire climate change situation.

"The motivation of our work is to help solve the global warming problems owing to humans' use of fossil fuel combustion engines to power machinery, such as cars and airplanes," explained

, lead researcher of the study and a professor at Wuhan University. "There is no need for fossil fuel with our design, and therefore, there is no carbon emission to cause greenhouse effects and global warming."

plasma jet device was able to lift a one-kilogram steel ball over a 24-millimeter diameter quartz cube, which is where the high-pressure air is transformed into a plasma jet thanks to passing through a microwave ionization chamber. To keep things in scale, this corresponds to the thrusting pressure comparable to a commercial plane jet engine.

"Our results demonstrated that such a jet engine based on microwave air plasma can be a potentially viable alternative to the conventional fossil fuel jet engine."

Air travel is part of the problem that

, so this type of engine could assist in slowing down that change over the coming years.

It"s a neat idea actually. The only problem is how to generate the electricity to power the engine in the first place. It could be fuel cell or if you want to go super high power, it could be powered by nuclear reactor.
