He doesn't. Huawei CEO position is a regular rotating chair among top staff, which is unique in corporate history. Ren is more or less kind of the "face" of Huawei instead of running its operational details, like his daughter does. Ren runs Huawei anymore like the Queen of England runs the UK.

Nah, they have rotating Chairman (of Board of Directors) every six months, while Ren Zhengfei has always been the CEO.

Really? Why is he still head of Huawei? Sounds like a shitty boss who lacks vision.
Times were different back then so I don't blame him US banning chips really was equivalent of cutting nose to spite someone and Chinese overestimated US policymakers competence in hindsight it's a good thing that it happened Chinese private firms needed some tough love that was long overdue and you couldn't ask for a better lesson than what Trump gave them

Wow. I wonder how many here still remember the days of VCD and DVD. And SVCD, anyone?

Back then Chinese manufacturers of audio/video players such as BBK had to pay hefty fees to foreign institutions for the licenses and patents on the audio/video codecs (MP3, MPEG, for example, and more). And there were fraudsters fooling the government and the industry with so-called new audio/video formats.

Well it's a Turkish scientist. Similarly, a Turkish scientist in Germany came up with the first Covid vaccine.

It just proves to show that in today's world you are at a decisive advantage if you can draw talents from all over the world. Huawei had research labs all over the world and it was by far the biggest Chinese company doing R&D and this is why it was targeted IMO.

Sure, the Chinese government can set up domestic labs to do R&D but many talented people don't want to move to China or don't speak Chinese. But they will work for a Chinese company located in their country of residence. Especially these days with the Covid restrictions.

So IMO the main lesson from Huawei is it's important to have large companies that have big enough money to spend on R&D without a near term return, and have them setting up research labs overseas. If you economy is composed only of small to mid sized tech companies you are at a disadvantage.
