yeah. it is matter of time, until China surpass USA in most of competitive fields.
look at this chart posted by NATURE magazine. top 10 institutes with number of research papers. check who is sit on top with huge margin.

CAS is incredibly massive through, although well, sometimes size and quantity is in itself quality/strength.
And well 3 and 4 is also big national bodies in Germany and France respectively I suppose.
there is another very interesting update. in first 6 months of 2022, Chinese IPOs in mainland raised 2X more capital than wall street. and 80% investment were in high tech/semiconductor. China has surpassed USA for the very first time. this is very significant news as global investors shows more faith in Chinese progress/development.

these are individual institutes. if we talk about overall number of research papers published by a country. Japan is on number 5th after USA, China , Germany and UK
