With a population of over a billion, you can select from the smaller proportioned segments of the population. Unlike northern European nations.

Chinese tanks usually have a pretty large crew space. Most Chinese turret designs were inspired from the initial layout of the T-54A, which was a three man turret. Even the 99 and 96/A still are internally quite roomy because they trace origin not from the T-72 but the T-54.
Drawback is that the turret geometry suffers in term of off angle protection.
