regarding the latest ztz-99, anyone know the quality of the sights, optics, and ballistic computer?

We know that china is embargoed by the west, and the best specimens pla has are probably derived from russian equipments, the russian optics themselves are behind western, as the latest t-90s uses catherine from france, so chinese tanks optics must also be a generation behind

is there any information that can disproof this assumption? Award for scientific breakthrough or papers or brochures, or reliable insider information?

I think you should lurk more. You are asking someone else to do the hard work of collecting hard-to-get information for you, yet you come in with your mind already made up. I for one don't see any incentive to help you here.

it was a friendly question, and an honest one

okay fine, at least now i know how some people reacts here :)

China imported several Matador FCS from israel during the early 80's to arm Type-79 tank,by the early 90's as part of type-85 tank project, they turn to Marconi eliot for technical assisstant to develop new generation of FCS,it was offical unveil in 1995,it included automatic target recognition and auto tracking.later will included Ir imaging ,it adapted SPRITE detection similiar to Britain's TOG,which equipt Challenger-1 and up grade version fo chiefttain tank. chieft complain abouyt the IR camera was small LOV
but SPRITE technology by standard was obselete, most western tank were fitted with gen 3 IR camera.
But during 2004 Zhuhai airshow, china display gen.3 Quantum well IR detector.
according booklet "ZTZ-99",due to cost only the gunner was fitted IR imaging camera, but DIIC claim both commander and gunner fitted with thermal camera.

thanks for that challenge

but it's hard to assume that China's latest tank will not be equipped with TC thermal view/channel, perhaps that was the case with older ZTZ-99s

about 2 years ago .Chinese technical magazine article about laser trigger for tank gun.(as oppose mechanical or hammer trigger to ignite the cartridge )what is the advantage of laser over the mechanical trigger?
possible Chinese made tank adapted this tecnology.

Reliability and safety. Replacing a mechanical device with solid state one improves reliability. If the laser is powerful enough, primer may not be needed. Without primer, some high explosive burns instead of explode when heated. This improves safety, survivability, and ammunition storage.

I really doubt Russian have a 152mm smooth bore tank gun -- may be close, but not exactly 152mm. Russian uses unique caliber for different ammunition to avoid confusion -- this is the policy since WW-2. Since there are 152mm howitzers (rifled), 152mm smooth bore gun cannot exist.

did China ever has access to modern Western 120mm guns?

no. But China did developed a smooth bore 120mm anti-tank gun in the 80s that was reputedly more powerful than the L44 120mm gun.
It was probably too heavy for the Chinese tank at the time, so it was mounted on an chassis as an self propelled anti-tank gun (type 89 if I remembered correctly).
