could it be for technical demonstration only? during the early 90's PLAAF actually lease some PAF F-16 for technical evaluation.

no they are using other tank in the video has references of other nations MBT. When you see other nations equipment it doesn't necessarily mean its related to China, only that they are trying to make a point.could it be for technical demonstration only? during the early 90's PLAAF actually lease some PAF F-16 for technical evaluation.
They also tend to be very heavy, all in the 60+ ton range. It looks like the Type 99A2 is getting close to 60 tons as well. This tank looks so different from the A1 version that it really should have a new name.
In many cases, heavy is good, especially for a tank. Combat experience has demonstrated that protection should be among your top 2 priorities in a armoured fighting vehicle.
Depends on the terrain, the most likely terrain for China to use its armor is in the mountainous Korea, the jungles of Vietnam, and the cliffs of the Himalayas, none of which favors behemoth tanks. Of course, there are still regions in each of those three areas where heavy tanks are useful, so it's still useful to develop them.
Afghanistan was not considered to be tank country as well, and the Leopard 2's that are in theatre (plus the US Marine M1 Abrams arriving in theatre) are doing quite well.
I would also add that considering Korea to not be tank country was proven wrong in the Korean War; tanks did very well in Korea.
No one is expecting the Cold War Fulda Gap scenario again, but the more armour you got in today's battlefield, the better off you are. It just means that the opponent needs to bring bigger weapons to the party, which are more detectable and easier to defeat.
I think that's the uparmored ZDB-07 IFV.
