J-10 database: prototypes, pre-serial & serial machines ...
Ok … As the original J-10 topic has grown up too large and especially gone a little off topic (even as I still haven’t solved that “missing engine-numbers” riddle) I would like a take a chance to start a special new tread for only this topic:
“Let’s make a database complemented by pictures of all identified J-10’s so far" …
So, just going back to topic – besides that I had some severe computer problems with CDF (it was spreading viruses until it was closed !!! )
For that reason I will start with “crobato’s estimation” and will post my questions here !
1. In Your list You refer to 10 prototypes !? :coffee:
… but that would indicate that “01” = “1001” with the additional static test frame (presumably “02”) not included as it wasn’t flying ! My biggest problem here is the fact, that I only know pictures of “(10)01”, “1002”, “1003” … then that strange yellow bird with the metal nose (maybe “1004”), “1005” (with IFR-probe), “1006” (seen with bombs) … and maybe “1009”. Does anyone have “1007” ?? (hehe 007 is missing )
2. Where are the “pre-serial” machines “1010” – “1019” ??
… I agree that they were transferred to the 13th Operational Trials Regiment (FTTC) which later also gained the first serial block to be numbered “01” – “09” ! My biggest problem here is the fact, that I only know pictures of “1013”, “1015”, “1016”, 01, 02, 05, and 08 (huitong also gives 06) and that these are all earlier birds with the 2-doors on the front gear. But then there’s the PL-12 equipped airplane without a number and the later 3-door arrangement, what indicated a later production machine or a refit of the older ones. I know that we can now assume that these “101x” machines were later re-numbered to the “two-digit” code by omitting the 10 … but where are the other planes ??
I remember one picture with 6 light-grey/light blue-grey planes sitting in a row … that would make at least 6 of these pre-production models !
3. The next question refers to the J-10B prototypes as You quote “1020” and “1021” !?
Do You have a picture of that “1020” as I only know “01” = “1021” and then later “03” = “1023” with once again “02” = “1022” missing … maybe as a static test frame !?
Ok … I hope this could be a starting point for discussion (but please stay on topic) and when I come home later from work I start posting the best pictures of all recognised machines I know !
Thanks for Your help,
Deino

crobato said:Anyway my estimation of J-10s is as follows
Prototypes = 10 [01, 1002 to 1009]
J-10B prototypes = 2 [1020, 1021], reassigned later to FTTC group
FTTC 13th Trials Regiment = 20 J-10A
131st Regiment of the 44th Division = At least 22-24 J-10A
130th Regiment of the 44th Division = At least 22-24 J-10A
This should mean around 72 J-10s by the end of 2005, of which 20 are used in operational trials and around at least 44 are in regular PLAAF regiments. Of the total, 64+ are combat capable.
Starting at 2006
? Regiment of the 3rd Division* = Will have at least 22-24 J-10A
? Regiment of the 2nd Division* = Will have at least 22-24 J-10A
Backordered J-10Bs to supply 4 planes per regiment = 16 J-10Bs for all groups
* In the process of conversion, which can end by the end of this year.
I am looking at possibly 60 J-10s to be made this year, of which 16 are J-10Bs. As this is March already, some of these J-10s are already made and being sent to the regiments above.
