China working on 'Super-10' advanced fighter

By Henry Ivanov JDW Correspondent

China is developing an advanced version of the Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Corporation (CAC) J-10 multirole fighter aircraft, referred to as the Super-10, with a more powerful engine, thrust-vector control, stronger airframe and passive phased-array radar, according to Russian sources.

Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG (RSK-MiG) specialists, contracted to provide technical assistance to Chinese design houses, said the enhancement to the J-10 airframe is a logical step, since the fighter was initially intended to have the compact Pratt&Whitney PW1120 engine that powered the Israeli Lavi aircraft, which served as a basis for the J-10.

However, the imposition of US export restrictions forced the decision to install the 20 per cent heavier Russian AL-31FN engine, which requires a larger intake as it needs 40 per cent more air flow.

In late 2005 China placed a USD300 million order for a second batch of AL-31FN engines; these are a derivative of the Su-27's AL-31F for single-engine aircraft, with a lower positioning of the gearbox. At first, it was believed the contract was for the same engines as in the first batch of 54 units supplied in 2001-02 and installed into development prototypes and initial production J-10s. However, AL-31FN-maker Moscow Machine Production Plant (MMPP) Salyut in December 2005 revealed the order to be for the AL-31FN M1, which is claimed to be a new AL-31FN production standard.

The company's general manager, Yuri Eliseyev, said the new engine was purposely developed for what he referred to as the "Chinese Super-10 fighter". Four such engines have been seen assembled at MMPP Salyut's Moscow production site. One of these has been demonstrated undergoing fire testing, during which its swivel nozzle was deflected up/down and sideways at full power and reheated thrust.

This article is a bit old, i am sure there are some mistake. Can anyone confirm if China actually got help from Russia on this Super 10 project?

Nope they didn't Russia wanted China to join in their development project, but China never asked for assistance or joint development

The context of the article sounded like jumbled, with some old news added in. Something's wrong with the context's timeline.

"Super 10" Project

Just to bring everyone up to speed, the term "Super 10" was coined by the Russians, not China. If this project had ever reached production, it would likely have been labelled with as a J-10C or J-10X or some similar designation - not "Super 10".

The only difference between the standard J-10 and the proposed "Super 10" arrangement was the substitution of a new version of the AL-31F engine, featuring a higher flow, redesigned fan to increase the engine's available thrust, and a thrust-vectoring nozzle. It was reported by a number of sources (including Jane's) that China received a prototype of the new engine in 2006. Since then, very little has been seen or heard on this project.

It could be that this proposed effort is still alive, and that Chengdu is merely going through the process of integrating the new engine with a new set of flight control laws. The general internet rumor mill, however, has suggested that Chinese officials have been horrified by the low reliability of the new engine, and its complex nozzle.

For the time being at least, focus appears to have been shifted towards inducting additional J-10 fighters into operational service, and working on China's next generation J-XX (now reportedly labeled as the J-12), rather than towards pursuing a "Super 10" that would benefit Russian sales more than China'd air force.

the russian source should be treated with doubt, example report of Chinese export of j-10 to iran, plan to export as many 1,000 knock off copy of J-11 to the thtird world (pakistan),export of backfire bomber to China turn out to be false.

Does any body know when Pakistan will get J10 and for which version pakistan has opted for either its a single engine or Twin engine varient of J10 and what is the status of twin engine j10 so far , its still in conceptual stage or under test and evaluation.

If engine is no issue (that is if engine is Russian) than I am guessing PAF will go for the deal somewhere around late 2009 (most least likely) or mid or late 2010.

J-10 pilot makes last minute inspections. Note HMS attachment on his helmet and the milky eyed PL-8, indicating the latest version with the cryogenic cooling. Likely that live firing will be involved.

It's the elusive PL-11 SARH which was originally thought to been never introduced into service with the advent of PL-12.
