New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

BYD is really good at building stuff, Jinan has been under production for a while including its new production base as well as semi fab. But more ahead, parts factory and world class race track test center are coming.
I've heard they acquired an adjacent piece of land zoned only for final assembly and there are plans to build another 400k capacity there for a total of 700

Any idea if that's true?

By my own calculation based on news here and there, it seems like BYD plans to have around 7 million capacity in China once their current plans are fully built up

They will likely only impose tariffs on Chinese automakers.

still going to hurt all the German automakers that export expensive models into China. BYD clearly has its plans of building EVs in EU. If they impose tariffs also on BYD production in Europe, then its game over for Germans in China, because something like 25 to 50% tariff on those JV production will make this lose out over night to domestic competitors

For U8 it is different. It is clearly an adventure type of car which neccisitate accounting for extreme cases. Not relevant for 95% of population.
Won't go any further because it would be beating a dead horse, but you actually proved my point. PHEV/EREV is not just low end (as you originally stated. Actually as noted by @4Runner, the complexity negates the possibility of lowest end like Wuling line)
It can be niche 4x4
It can be luxury
It can be lower end too
PHEV sales are growing China, last year was the biggest jump (though still behind pure EVs in volume)

Blackberry phone also went up in sale when iPhone initiated the smartphone craze. But make no mistake, it is not reflective of technology itself. It is also not going to be long term. PHEV is the blackberry in this case.

Advantage of PHEV:
  • good for extremely cold places and underdeveloped places.
  • good for niche adventure oriented cars.
  • good for easing anxious buyer unfamiliar with EV. (temporary advantage)
  • due to worse performance than EV it serve as low end artificially.
    • in the same manner, computer chips are artificially gimped to create low end product lines. Lowered price do not reflect the same lowered cost to maker.
Emphasize on point 3. Luxury buyers tend to be old people anxious of new tech, thats is why sometimes luxury car that is not "off-roader" are PHEV when EV is viable. Nevertheless, you still see U7 and U9 are pure EV serving as BYD's top of the line cars.

This is an interesting chart. I can almost relate the degrees of progressiveness or open-mindedness or worldliness in each listed US city to the Y order of this chart. This chart also invokes an idea of comparing top 50 cities between US and China, instead of whole countries. Similar to fashion and tech, top 50 cities of each country certainly serve as a leading or trending indicator of the time.

why I think Brazil is the perfect market for BYD
Brazil might have similar GDP (PPP) per capita than China. But Brazil is also a highly unequal society. Much more than China. So the pressure to sell the cheaper cars there will be much larger I think. Because the society is highly stratified Chinese luxury car vendors might also experience some success there. As long as their cars are bulletproof. Armored cars are a thing for the wealthy in Brazil.
