New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

Huh, so something I missed out on was GWM's new Hi-4 PHEV system that will be used on newly launched Haval Xiaolong

Previous PHEV hybrids were unable to compete with BYD because BYD's was simply the simplest and lowest cost for a given performance

But one big change this time is that it uses a special 2 motor arrangement for 4WD, by merging the generator motor into the front motor. Normal 4WD typically have 1 generator + 1 front motor + 1 rear motor. This means it can save significantly on cost.

Also has decent efficiency thanks to the new 41.5% efficiency engine (similar to BYD), and decent performance (6+ seconds 0-100).

It looks like BYD's 4WD DMP finally has some good competition

Chery and SAIC brands are completely exploding

Chery's brands like Chery, Jetour, Exeed: Q1 sales are around 1/2 or 1/3 from previous months

SAIC's MG sold 8000 in Jan/Feb and 6000 cars in March. Bear in mind MG usually sold like 30-40k a month in 2022. Roewe sales halved too.

Likely because they sell mainly ICE cars.

But Changan (the big bro for ICE cars) still holding on decently.

Chery (re-)launched in Australia just a couple of weeks ago with the Omoda 5. Hopefully sales will be reported from next month. Meanwhile MG has established itself as the leading Chinese brand here, finishing in 7th position for 2022 with 49,600 sales.

Australia is a relative backwater in terms of NEV adoption, perhaps that is one reason China's legacy manufacturers are looking to expand here. I think JAC is planning to arrive in Australia sometime this year also.

Can you describe it in more detail? Otherwise this sounds like a typical hybrid…

I'm not very well versed in hybrid stuff so might have been scammed by their marketing but most Chinese "car talkers" seem to be excited

Basically, from what I understand (do correct me if I'm wrong) most hybrids on the market use a normal engine and transmission for most driving + a weak electric motor that can be used for weak pure electric driving/assist at low speeds and also function as a energy recovery generator from braking.

BYD's DMi and Geely's Leishen use a large front electric motor for most driving + a high efficiency engine that can directly drive the car when at efficient speeds + a generator that can absorb excess energy from the engine/replenish when battery is low

To make it 4WD like BYD's DMp, you simply add another big motor to the rear. So you have a total of 1 engine, 1 front motor, 1 rear motor and 1 generator

GWM's Hi-4 uses a large rear motor for most driving + a high efficiency engine that can directly drive the car when at efficient speeds + a front motor/generator. So in total it uses 1 less large motor compared to DMp but still achieves 4WD.

Pros are that it can likely achieve 4WD at similar cost and fuel consumption to DMi, lower fuel consumption compared to normal engine+transmission.
Con is that it may turn into RWD when it runs low on battery.

Of course, these pros and cons are just conjecture until we see more reviews.

BYD winning numerous awards for commercial vehicles, should announced models soon

mystery car is SongL, there might be a QinL and a Xia model later this year too

U8 to start sales on 04/18. exciting times

Chery to unveil eQ7 at Shanghai motor show. This will be big for them since their sales are way down this year

It’s nothing new then

Your “typical hybrid” is basically a classic Toyota Prius-type parallel hybrid.

All plug-in hybrids since the Chevy Volt (first on the market) basically work in the second way. Also, the generator is never separate as far as I know in any car, just the motor running in reverse.

Almost all plug-in hybrids will use the gas engine on the highway as it’s more efficient and less draining on the battery.

The new generation Chinese car buyers do not admire foreign brands like their parents do.

In the first three months of 2023, China exported 1.07 million vehicles, a 58.3% increase from the same period last year, while the value of the shipments increased 96.6% to 147.5 billion yuan ($21.5 billion)

It looks like that China will export more than 4 million units this year and will overtake Japan to be the largest auto exporter in the world in 2023.
