For all the various EV brands that I have read so far from China, Avatr has the best design. Absolutely gorgeous cars. I would give their designs absolutely 10/10. Next for me is Xpeng. I think they have original design. Zeekr also has good designs.
I hope rest of the brands improve their design language. BYD to me is the most "uninspiring" design among major brands.

BYD is a bunch of engineers make cars, technology is good but aesthetic is not major people taste.

Business is cutthroat, government should stay out of it. And especially not direct state subsidies or state investments in this industry any more. Let the private sector figure it out
I feel that this is more inter-province rivalry which will require central government intervention to resolve. If BYD based in Guangdong has infrastructure money dumped on it by the rich provincial government, that will already have competitive advantage compares to other car makers, it's hard to not complain and ask for intervention when it is hundreds of thousands of jobs on the line.

Chinese industry is at its strongest when it is facing a common enemy and must present a united front. Now that foreign brands sales are collapsing, civil war is the next best thing.

Saying a bunch of engineers just make cars is like saying architects just make buildings. There is artistry in those sciences. BYD cars looking like what they do are the result of a multiple factors - none of which should be taken to indicate they have soul-less engineers on staff.

For instance - Mass market EVs are generally designed to minimise Cd so as to maximise range performance. Form will follow function so the design is already constrained there. Performance cars have different audiences and can sacrifice economy indicators for outright performance and style.

BYD is also a very Mass Market targeted range of vehicles. So cost is a major driver. As such, every complex shaped body panel and structure adds to manufacturing complexity and adds to the bottom line drive away price. It's kinda unfair that you compare BYD (mass market) vs Avatr, Xpeng and Zeekr - all of which target the luxury segment. Perhaps more one should more accurately compare the Denza and Yangwang, which are BYD's luxury brands.

The success of BYD does show that it ticks the box for exactly what it was designed to do - appeal to the mass market. If the market is buying solely on price - then it validates that resources are not wasted on design elements that won't be appreciated. If the market doesn't buy solely on price, then beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the BYD appeals to the masses, just not you.

I also like the design of iCar, the Chery off-road EV brand. 1749740682872.png1749740702173.png1749740712947.png1749740545314.png
