note the radar they were looking at was is designed for Helicopters, I saw a graphic online that indicated they inteneded to mount the radar on a retractable mount in the belly.
Yes, SeacrhWater 2000 is a helo solution...but, mounted on an aircraft and carried aloft higher, it should give better performance just the same.

Many of the uninformed look at an E-2 and think.. that thing can't do anything...WTH?? On the contrary the E-2 is the most important part of a CVW. They are called the Eyes of the fleet.

No flight ops start without an E-2 airborne..

At first I thought, how can a person with hobby in military equipment doesn't know the importance of EWAC, until i saw the word uninformed;)

Right now, I think this could be a challenge for the Chinese navy to develop something similar to E-2. That is the most important thing for the carrier fleet

absolutely. An AEW aircraft is the eyes and ears of any CSG. W/O it, your ability is severely hindered. AEW not only does what most people think it does but it's also a crucial C5ISR asset use for battlespace management around the entire fleet air defense and offensive deep penetrating strike missions.

Needless to say, Liaoning's capabilities will be enhanced significantly if PLAN can get a really good AEW plane going for them like the E2D Hawkeye.

Amen to 110% of every bit of that, Kwaig.

A strong AEW&C platform gives the US and French Carrier groups a HUGE advantage in any potential engagement with any other CSG out there.

Every nation seriously considering deploying a carrier group simply has to consider developing this type of capability if they ever...and I mean EVER, feel that their group may be pitted against another carrier group in any way shape or form. Or even against any group of strike aircraft coming at them from any quarter.

So, a retractable radar dome (will be interesting to see exactly what technology they eomploy), data link, and other niceties. It will be a great enhancement for the Brazilian carrier, the Sao Paulo now, and then the new carrier they acquire in the future. And, with the Sea Grippens, they will have a fairly formidable carrier air wing.

This is how the E-1B Tracer looked in US Navy service which the AEW version of the S2 Tracker back then. Such an option would be very nice for Brazil and would be superior to a helicopter option.

We had four(I think) of these aboard Hancock in '74 & '75. We called 'em "Willie Fudd"..no foolin'.

Four E-1Bs on deck..

USS Hancock (CVA-19) leaves Pearl Harbor en route to Vietnam, after a change of command ceremony for Commander, U.S. Pacific Command — ADM John S. McCain, Jr. relieved ADM Ulysses S. Grant Sharp, July 31, 1968. This was the carrier's 4th Vietnam Cruise, July 18, 1968–March 3, 1969.

The last Willie Fudd was retired in 1977.

I wonder if the Brazilians will upgrade the engines? these were driven by a rotary piston engine dontcha know?!

they supposedly contracted with Marsh Aviation to convert the AEW platforms to Turbo Trackers using Honeywell TPE-331 turbo-prop power plants

Given the location and shape I think this would consistent with the Thales Searchwater 2000AEW that is of course if the image I posted is reliable.

Yes, I believe that a modified/improved Thales Searchwater 2000AEW will be installed.

It will be a superior solution to the helos, but probably still not as powerful (or as expensive) as adding a modern dome would be.

The BRazilianss will end up though with a pretty nice capability with those aircraft, the tankers, and the Sea Gripens.

Naval Today said:
Five E-2D Advanced Hawkeyes assigned to Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 125 will make their maiden deployment as part of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).

The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is set to replace the E-2C Hawkeye in its primary mission to provide airborne early warning and command and control capabilities for all aircraft-carrier battle groups. While the primary mission for the E-2 has not changed, the Advanced Hawkeye is able to gather and process data more precisely and efficiently thanks to state-of-the-art radar and communication equipment.

The Advanced Hawkeye’s technology makes it a multi-mission platform through its ability to coordinate concurrent missions which may arise during a single flight. These missions can include airborne strike, ground force support, rescue operations and managing a reliable communications network capable of supporting drug interdiction operations.

With the first five going out to sea, the Navy plans to continue procuring the Advanced Hawkeye to replace the Hawkeye through 2023.

This is good news. Glad to see more and more US Carrier Air Wings getting the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye.

The capabilities of the US Navy AEW&C Aircraft are a huge advantage, force multiplier, and game changer for US Navy Carrier Strike group operations.
