In December 1978, NATO took the decision to acquire eighteen E-3A Sentry AWACS, which are implemented by mixed crews, in order to bring the benefit of NATO member countries and operations are under the command of this international organization.

Since the delivery of the last device in the month of May 1985, the E-3A Sentry participate regularly, according to NATO, the air police missions, support for anti-terrorist operations, initial entry during ' a triggering of an operation management of airspace, the fight against piracy, etc ... Recent operations have occurred where the E-3A Sentry NATO correspond to Afghanistan to Libya in 2011, as well as many NATO summits and international events (World Cups, etc ...).

This entire fleet of seventeen devices after one of them crashed either in Greece, is stationed in Luxembourg (NATO lacks air force) and it carries out missions for countries that participate in this program, whether Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, and the United States.

France, with its four E-3F Sentry AWACS and the UK E-3D and are not directly switch to the program, since they have their own devices. However, they attend meetings as observers and ensure that their devices are capable of working in cooperation with the NATO AWACS following the various modernization programs.

It is in this framework that the Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, has taken delivery of an E-3A Sentry AWACS NATO to be stored in the giant airplane graveyard near the same basis Air Force USAF. The information was released Wednesday, June 24, 2015, in a post on the official Facebook page of the US air base.

This device, carrying the registration LX-N90449 (this accuracy interest to photographers!), Achieved its last operational mission May 13, 2015, and remained in the service of NATO member countries for thirty-two years. During these, he completed no less than 22 200 flying hours.

This is the first E-3A Sentry is removed from service after active service. Henceforth, the NATO fleet consists of sixteen AWACS E-3A Sentry, alongside three C-17 Globemaster III stationed in Hungary, in favor of NATO member countries that do not have a plane strategic transport.

Expansion Continues: Now, It is Montenegro's Turn to Join NATO in 2015

Montenegro may join NATO already before this year is out, Russian media reported Monday, citing a source at the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has been expanding eastward ever since the 1992 Soviet breakup. Almost all former members of the now-defunct Warsaw Treaty Organization, and the three ex-Soviet Baltic republics joined NATO between 1999 and 2009.

Poland earlier said that during its July 2016 summit in Warsaw NATO would invite Montenegro and Macedonia to join the alliance.

“Montenegro is an ideal candidate,” the source told the Moscow-based Kommersant newspaper, adding that no other country had any real chances of joining the

any time soon.

The newspaper also quoted a government source in Podgorica as saying that Montenegro was the only non-NATO country in the Adriatic and that NATO membership was seen as the only way to ensure the country’s security.

According to the newspaper, the Montenegrins expected an invitation to join in during the NATO summit in Cardiff in September 2014, but eventually decided to bring the matter up at the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in December 2015, without waiting for the next NATO summit in Warsaw in July 2016.

This article was taken from Sputnik New Media. So it has an anti NATO bias.

The overall goal of the NATO initiative, undertaken in the light of the Ukrainian crisis, is to reassure the allies of the NATO eastern flank, and to maintain collective defense capabilities.

It is worth noting that this time the deployment did not get that much media attention, in comparison with the previous presence of the

Latvia, Lithuania Mull Joint Air Defense Acquisition Program

The Latvian and Lithuanian leaders considered the purchase of medium-range air defense systems.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Latvia and Lithuania are considering a joint air defense acquisition program, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said.

On Monday, Lithuanian and Latvian presidents, Dalia Grybauskaite and Raimonds Vejonis, met in Vilnius.

"We discussed issues related to strengthening military cooperation, including the joint acquisition of weaponry, especially air defense," Grybauskaite told at a joint press conference on Monday, quoted by the Baltic Times.

The Lithuanian president did not provide more details on the plans, but said that joint purchasing would be cheaper and more beneficial.

The Latvian leader added that the states were considering the purchase of medium-range air defense systems. Poland could also join the process, he suggested.

In May, the defense ministers for Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania discussed plans to develop a joint air defense system.

This would make good sense for them. And for them, it would be a good thing if they could also bring Poland into the mix.

Yes they are too small (militarily) to have an independent and uncoordinated defense spending. They need to team up with joint purchase and interchangeability of parts and equipment. Also combined purchase can take advantage of Economy of Scale.

I think 3 month ago Poland elected to acquire Patriot systems to meet their medium range GBAD requirement. Negotiations for the actual buy should be ongoing right now. They are looking for 8 batteries.
I don't know the polish time scale, but I guess Lithuania and Latvia would have to act rather quick to get in ont this. Although I see that making sense, too.
Then again, I wonder if by "medium range" the baltic countries mean somehting on the scale of Patriot, in the way Poland does.
