This is from nearly a week ago but I didn't see it posted in this thread.

A son, daughter, and son-in-law of the Bai family of Kokang reportedly died on 11/15 while trying to escape from Laukkaing by helicopter.

Reports also say that before their escape attempt, the Bai family had tried to negotiate with the MNDAA but were told by the MNDAA that their only choice is to turn themselves in to the Chinese authorities. The Bai family is the most powerful family in Kokang with 4,000 fighters under their command.

Here is an interesting Global Times articles that touches on some of the points being discussed
- As mentioned, many of these scammers moved from Fujian to Myanmar (Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand as well). As mentioned by others, but not in the article, if anyone follows telecom fraud in China, many fraudsters had originated in Taiwan. Since many Taiwanese are descended from Fujian, they were able to recruit their relatives and clanspeople.

- Are they criminals or victims? This article implies that many know what they are getting into. If you have read about telecom scams in other countries like India or Nigeria, certainly the demographic of younger males with low prospects is prevalent in all these situations. That being said, these SEA scam centres seem more brutal than the other countries'.

- Organ harvesting is not likely occurring at a large scale.

Good luck to these Taiwan fellows

There appears to be varying levels of involvement in the scam industry:

  • Arrives in Myanmar for a job promised to be high-paying but is forced into scamming after passport confiscation.
  • Initially enticed by a high-paying job, ends up owing money after being whined and dined, becoming involved in a scam.
  • Responding to promises of a lucrative job, arrives in Myanmar and must engage in scams to make the trip worthwhile and recoup expenses.
  • Already having a criminal background and facing difficulty in the legitimate job market, goes to Myanmar for scams.
  • Someone with no prior criminal record goes to Myanmar due to the availability of criminal enterprises.
  • A person with a previous criminal record willingly seeks better gains and rewards through engagement in scams.

Not all individuals are instantly innocent or guilty. When investigating they should check for previous criminal record to best determine which scenario it is.

Fun fact: two out of these three characters were apprehended in China because they were tricked into participating in a basketball competition and a marathon held in Yunnan, and while there the police closed in on them.

Would've loved to be a fly on the wall at those events, police probably went up and said something like "got scammed innit?"
Making sure they are too tired to run fast first before apprehending them.

There's also a close up of 明学昌's body where someone is examine his eye, I didn't include it but if you want to check it's all over weibo. It does look like 明学昌 is dead.

明学昌 supposedly killed himself at a Burmese army HQ out of psychologic pressure. But if that's where it happened it could just as well be he was sold out by the Junta army and in a panic they killed him and handed over his body and family in hope that offensive will end due to orders from higher power. Or maybe they didn't want him to talk in Chinese custody and fess up evidence that would make the Junta look bad. Who knows.
This some Narcos shit going on here. They should act it in a movie. If only China had a good movie industry globally, I think this will be very popular even overseas.
