So far I don't think anyone has died from this new variant, so it may not be too bad. It's definitely odd.

Conspiracy time: I remember reading that monkeypox was one of the viruses studied in the USSR as a possible candidate for a biological weapon. Of course releasing it now would be stupid and suicidal but it does make you wonder.
So are we really assuming it is mainyl transmitted by sex? Seems kinda fast spreading, then again in the west, the more sex with the more different people the better ...
I'm not aware of any cox disease being considered an STI. It's skin contact, think of something like chickenpox.

Wrong actor in your conspiracy, the US and big pharma are spreading it. Monkeypox and other pox diseases are airborne. This is literally the same debate as the COVID ones verbatim 2 years ago.

New variant? Are we sure it’s a new variant? Last I read, the strain (only 2) that is spreading is not the deadly strain (~10%) but the weaker strain (~1%) but those numbers are likely lower because Africa healthcare system isn’t adequate.

Various sources mention that mortality rate can be up to 3.6% for the West African clade. It is possible that it would be less than 1% for developed countries. However, unlike covid, Monkeypox mortality rate for children are significant higher. At the moment, 10% of cases are severe. Although, we have no idea how they categorize severe cases.

Since September 2017, Nigeria has continued to report cases of monkeypox. From September 2017 to 30 April 2022, a total of 558 suspected cases have been reported from 32 states in the country. Of these, 241 were confirmed cases, and among these there were eight deaths recorded (Case Fatality Ratio: 3.3%).

The case fatality ratio for the West African clade has been documented to be around 1%, whereas for the Congo Basin clade, it may be as high as 10%. Children are also at higher risk, and monkeypox during pregnancy may lead to complications, congenital monkeypox or stillbirth.

It is interesting how monkey pox is far more deadly in children than adults. I read that the deadly variant with a 10% mortality rate has a 17% mortality rate in children.
