It's because he is at the end of the day, part of the US 'elite'.I used to read every book and article he published.
But increasingly he seems like an AngSax Imperialism apologist to me. He continues to state that the US is "pushing its values" (democracy, capitalism, blah blah blah), whereas it's been exceedingly clear to those not infected by the empire's lies to know that "values" are just the excuse needed to topple governments, launching genocidical invasions and robbing others' natural and human resources.
It's the tiny fig leave that enable the AngSax empire to bypass international conventions, laws, and basic human decency.
He can benefit when the US 'pushes it values' such as democracy and capitalism, democracy because it weakens governments while also making it much easier for bribery etc. and capitalism ofc because he is a capitalist and know how to play 'with it' and the 'rules of capitalism', basically easier time for him to earn money.
As for why he often writes about China to the point he is called a 'wumao', likely because he has many investments and money invested in China, which he might not really have an easy time with getting out of China (not to mention selling off stuff might have to be done at a small loss, along with potential future loss if the sold off stuff rises in value in the future).
