People have been arguing for a long time that should China and US's place be swapped China as the Hegemon would be much the same way, if not worse. That, I think, demonstrates why the current panic that China is out to replace the U.S. is bogus. It in fact is not trying to convince other countries to follow its own form of government. What it does advocate is that each and every country must follow the form of governance best suited for itself and alternatives shouldn’t be force on people.
It is like Chinese versus Western view of dedollarization. Westerners think Yuan will replace the dollar whereas the Chinese think other currencies will replace the dollar.
Recently I thought of a good counter-example to this that's not based on ancient history: after the fall of the Soviet Union it never occurred to China to take on the mantle of the Socialist 老大哥 role that became vacant. Instead China's position remained that no one country or party should have monopoly to interpret what's socialism and what's not. So when DPRK accused China of engaging in capitalist revisionism after the start of the economic reform China's response was basically "well that's like, your opinion man" and not Theory of Limited Sovereignty.
