If the Chinese thinks a slow moving balloon won't be detected, the pentagon also wouldn't want to reveal that they could or could not detect it.

Supposely the balloon part is difficult to detect but the hanging piece of equipment is likely reflective as a aircraft. But I imagine radars at one point were program to scrub out slow moving objects but ML/AI and excess cpu could prob help with categorizing.
And yet still not detected until it was visually spotted... I read in an article that because the balloon is moving with the winds and the material of a balloon doesn't bounce back like it were metal, it would be interpreted as a natural phenomenon like clouds on radar.

The current thinking is to wait until it is over the Atlantic Ocean to then try to shoot it down and retrieve it, according to a senior U.S. official familiar with the situation. There is too great a risk to try to shoot it down over the continental U.S., the official said. Since the U.S. wants to keep the balloon to study it, and there are otherwise risks of an international incident, U.S. officials are working on plans to shoot it down so that it also lands in U.S. territorial waters, the official said. A substantial localized airspace shutdown will likely be required in order to protect civilians while the U.S. tries to down the balloon, which is likely being navigated via Chinese spy satellites, the official said.
So CN is still controlling the balloon via satellite?
The coast is getting a bit more crowded now...

No, US detected it before it flew past into Alaska...

It could be misinformation either way about the ability to detect it. If they were able to detect it, they may not want to let the Chinese know that they can detect. If they can't detect it , they may also not want the Chinese know that they can't detect it. They have known that these balloons have been going over the US for years (since they prob do the same with China and other countries). I suspect these balloons usually dip up and down from 100k or stay above 100k as that is consider out of territory/space. This instance could either be a "accident" where an error prevented the balloon to move back up or a purposely done event to troll on the US (Blinken).

If this disappears into the atmosphere and leaves the US it will be LOL from Team China
If this gets shot down and retrieved, it will be LOL for Team USA
If this "gets shot down" and never retrieved, both sides are giving face.

Former colonal says there is only a 12 mile window between the us coast and international waters that the US can legally shoot it down.

That makes sense, will be good PR for US. Hope the payload have some manner of self destruct capability onboard

Do not encourage stupidity, even though it can be really funny!

If this was a spy balloon, how would it transmit its data back to home base?

Probably via satellite relay. The other possibility is that the balloon is wearing a tin foil hat.

Yup, that is America today.

Yeah, no. It's China that's been loling while its surveillance balloon has been on a days-long sightseeing tour of the US while buttmad Americans screech on the ground because they can't do anything about it. Whatever America does now is irrelevant. From a practical perspective, the balloon has already transmitted everything its gathered to relay satellites so any surveillance mission is already complete. From a signalling perspective, China spat on America's "sovereignty" and America can't do anything about it.
