Reading an account of this, the Japanese supposedly brought 9 Coast guard vessels to escort the Shinsei Maru, which has some ecologists on board to inspect "ecological damage" caused by goats on Diaoyu Island. Interesting trivia, the goats themselves were actually introduced by the Japanese some decades ago to the island. Anyway, according to this the Chinese coast guard attempted to break through but could not because of the 9 vessels. Hence Shinsei Maru could fly their drones near the island.

Ok not really sure how accurate the article is in terms of numbers because I can't tell from the video, but it does seem that the Japanese drones were able to fly very near the island. TBH I think the Chinese coast guard was caught off guard in this incident, they need to have better surveillance capabilities, and be on the alert for stunts like this.

Ukraine has stopped Russian naval shelling and amphibious landing threat with a few harpoon batteries and kept the Russian Air Force from executing a successful strike campaign using old Soviet SAMs. It even broke the Russian blockade on its grain exports with political maneuvering. It is using many improvised and civilian technologies to fight. How the West handles its militaries has more to do with the lack of a real threat to Western countries and sociocultural reasons. It also has to do with military personnel's own pursuit of high respect. Everything mil-spec even if there are available products on the market, a lot of high-ranking officers with high salaries, long and overly expensive training cycles, every procurement involves over specced and highest-tech equipment while basics like munition inventories are neglected...

The US can get away with these problems because of its eye-watering mil spending. European militaries can't. Most non-US NATO militaries are huge welfare programs with massive capability gaps.

He's so close, yet the real insight eludes him.

The way Ukraine makes use of military equipment with briefly-trained men and reservists is the greatest threat to our 'standing army' bureaucracies since the end of the Cold War.

They hold the Russian Air Force at bay with almost nothing, neutralised the Black Sea Fleet without using a single ship or submarine to do so, their personnel needs only weeks to learn making good use of Western AFVs and artillery pieces.

They're showing that there's no need to have huge standing armies in which lots of enlisted men (and women) serve for more than two years, and many officers have careers beyond the rank of major.

The armed bureaucracy's self-interest is to be big, have much prestige in society, have much money to spend, play with toys. A proper reserve army's concept is to have equipment mostly stored away, much money spent on munitions in climate-controlled storage, brief training up to lieutenant rank, very few officers above lieutenant rank with great training, administrative stuff done with civilian skills. It's no fun for those who hold power in armed bureaucracies and ministries of defence.

The way Ukraine fights is an almost mortal danger to our armed bureaucracies. It disproves its supposedly self-evident myths. Myths that are integral, indispensable to pursuit of their self-interest.

This seems like bs to me.

First of all, this is not a port, it is a base, so no warships coming out of that.

Second of all, what about the air force? I doubt there are planes involved.

Thirdly, seems like the only thing they can really do is launch missiles from these bases.

Remember, these are not American bases, these are Philippines bases. How much is the host going to allow the guess to do?

Also, look at the map. Chinese artillery can hit those bases from the island bases in the South China Sea. LOL. They ready for an artillery duel, like the old days? I don't think so.

This is about warfare. Most important thing, is do not get tricked. Heard that from somewhere.

Nice propaganda show, but very limited military value.

Price would have risen alot more for Global south for this blockade. Putin even said to Erdo take free Russian grains for Africa.

yup after his experience. German who are behind this free stuff delivery will have very change approach to the world. They will either make sure to squeeze economically every one else to create real German force or leave every one high and dry to fend for themselves. This may be the last war fought with donations.

Ukraine went backward in living standard post 1980s. (after cherno). so it is not a society that other will emulate.

I would not be as dismissive.

Those bases can be used as staging grounds to launch and operate UUVs. The UUVs are capable of threatening Chinese military installations (mainly naval-related) on those SCS islands and across the seabed. There is also the Yulin Submarine Base on Hainan which these UUVs are definitely going to be "interested" in.

Of course, this is only one of the multiple ways I could see how these Filipino bases can be utilized by the Americans.

One mental note: Judging by all these things happening right now vis-a-vis US-Phillipines' joint actions against China - Once everything is over, China should seek to (or shall I say, must) set up military bases and installations on the Philippine archipelago.

Reason? The Stockholm Syndrome illness (which, unfortunately, is rather common across countries located along the entirety of the FIC) must be treated.

Idk man, its just proving the old adage that quantity has a quality on its own.

Many times in history, it was decreed that technology means that numbers don't matter anymore, Ukraine war is just proof that they still do.

Russian military buildup has been betting poorly on new trends.
