That role was always enemy with an obedient appearance from the beginning of history. Among all East Asian countries or nomadic tribes there were only three whose rulers declared to be Emperor, China, Vietnam and Japan. Although the last two were "closet Emperors" but you can see how they wanted their roles to be.
Bro my view, ASEAN is consolidating (we want a voice against any hot war in the region)and who is the leader in the region , Indonesia and For what? well we're being squeeze by Chinese growing prominence and American imperialism, we are seeing a new cold war and we don't want a part of it not in our neighborhood. In fact a strong ASEAN is beneficial to China as a bulwark against any new US aggression in the region and let's admit it SCS had become a Chinese lake and we are comfortable with it, China is our neighbor and we want trade to flow so why allow an interloper to interfere?
For the record, we should remember, or at least know if we were not around, of how Chancellor Kohl reunited Germany after the Cold War.
If we do not want to go that far back, they built the Nordstream-2 pipeline because the Germans wanted it, against what turned out to be furious American opposition, to the point that those pipelines blew up by themselves, like #2 and #1 as well. To be fair, this is likely an intimidation US warning shot about banning more tech and chips from other Chinese consumer companies.
Even though the China-hating countries may be too dumb to realize it, there needs to be a US independent source for hi tech/cpu otherwise one's countrie independence will always be compromise.
