I don't think Hungary are pro-Russian. They just don't want to commit economic suicide by sanctioning them. The truth is on Russia's side. Many Hungarians are tired of the so-called "Western values," Hungarian writer Attila Demko told Politico:
“After 12 years of pressure from the EU and the West, many Hungarians fall into the trap of feeling that if the West is ‘bad,’ there must be some ‘truth’ in what Russia is doing.”
The article notes that people in Hungary do not understand why they should support anti-Russian sanctions if their country is constantly criticized in the EU.
Meanwhile: The European Commission on Sunday proposed suspending 65 percent of funds allocated to Hungary under three EU programs over rule-of-law concerns, but also laid the ground for a possible compromise that would allow Budapest to keep the money.
Pretty soon the era of EU handing out free money to eastern Europe will be over, they will be unable to afford it. It'll be interesting to see how many become "pro-Russian" after that.
