In 2020, a South Korean shipyard
contracts to build new ice-class Arctic gas carriers. These carriers
to incorporate technologies derived from icebreakers, such as azimuth thrust on the rudder propeller, which would have enabled 360° turns. However, not all shipbuilders were deterred by the sanctions. Samsung Heavy Industries successfully
one of three ice-class gas carriers to the customer in March 2022, and on June 27, 2023, the floating liquefied natural gas storage vessel Saam FSU
safely in Murmansk. There will be two in total, with the second, named Koryak FSU, scheduled to be moored off the coast of Kamchatka in July. Incidentally, they were built by Daewoo Shipbuilding Marine Engineering, which received the order in… 2020.
From this, one can easily conclude that international restrictions apply to the development of the Arctic fleet only nominally—the prospects for developing the Arctic are too attractive, and anyone who misses this opportunity risks a great deal.
