Public intellectuals complaining about the current state of the world is a classism thing that has thousands of years of history behind it, it's part of how they justify their existence to the common people. It's just historically the paragon they hold up is some mythical golden past in China's history. Ever since Opium War though they've had to change track and instead hold up foreign countries as the paragon.

When the time comes and China has unambiguously won, I bet they will just change tunes and go back to using idealized Chinese past dynasties again. You can already see attempts at this with that lady talking up Ming-dynasty and claiming they invented everything including steam engines.

Hard power like industry, steel and electricity are all dominated by China. China per capita is more productive than Europe or America in manufacturing which is the real economy.

Just as Temstar stated, they might do what the Persian libs do - wish for a return of the ancient Persian Empire. Or if they're crazy enough like the Hindutva, who believe nukes, airplanes and skyscrapers were invented in ancient India, they might invent a mythical former land like Akhand Bharat that is better than the current.

So, both Chinese govt and her seem greedy. Not what sports should be about. Overall, just a toxic and embarassing episode for China.

It is what it is. On the one hand, Eileen Gu represents a turning tide, that a half Chinese half American girl raised in America can choose to be Chinese when all we've seen is these people becoming American. She's high profile; her 2 gold medals ranked China above the US at the time (although some Russian doping issue brought the US back up to an equal 9 golds later) and not one American was happy about her choice or what it represented. America is the talent-sucking vampire of the world and that was its "Drago is cut" moment when China took someone who was supposed to be American away. That's got to be inspiration to a lot of Chinese and mixed Chinese people in the US especially those who are now disillusioned with America's recent descent into madness.

The only real bad thing is, and this is totally because China has not freed itself from the shackles of white worship yet, that after her performance, I've heard of Chinese people saying they want mixed babies like her. That's not her fault; that's on us. She didn't ask to half anything and she didn't tell Chinese people to make more people like herself. (But what if Chinese people made more mixed babies who idolized Eileen Gu and with China's rapid ascent on the global stage, all proudly proclaimed when they came of age that they're proudly Chinese, side fully with China and anyone who has a problem with that can just cry about it?) Eileen Gu was born into this world the way she is and by choosing to represent China instead of the US not once but twice (which exceeded my expectations since I thought she would represent the US the second time to call herself a global citizen), she really gave her best to us. That's a lot more than what a lot of Chinese people choose to give back. Can't blame her big picture, although you can nitpick her smaller life choices as being less than ideal for a Chinese idol. But you have to remember, she's only 22 this year, 18 when she won in Beijing, a beautiful young girl invited everywhere and tempted by every occasion, so it's a fairly big request to ask that she behave herself as a disciplined model member of Chinese society.

I could be wrong, since I don't have an X account. But you know what's one China talking point I've seen dissappear from online discourse entirely, or at least just very little of it? The notion that Made in China is a thing of the past and that Made in Vietnam or India is the future.

As someone who does have an X account, I still see this point. Reason? Coz there are 1.5B Indians and even though only half of them are online, thats a lot of people. That means a lot of delusional jai hinds who still think India is a supapowa that will be the world's factory.

Maybe amongst westerners its different. But thats only coz they hate India so much now they rather see China keep the factories for now than give it to India.

As for Vietnam, even Trump doesn't believe they are operating independently of China. They are basically the factory equivalent of China's money launder. So no one cares even though they are developing faster than India. Thats why I believe India's rival might not be China but in fact Vietnam in the future.
